Sydney Sweeney has become well-known thanks to her work with HBO, but many consider her strongest performance to be in the series Sharp Objects, despite it not receiving as much attention as her other roles. She first gained widespread recognition playing Cassie Howard in the provocative teen drama Euphoria, and later earned praise for her portrayal of Olivia Mossbacher in the first season of The White Lotus.
Sydney Sweeney received Primetime Emmy nominations for both of those television shows, and she’s used her success to build a busy film career. While some of her 2025 movies didn’t do well in theaters, she ended the year with a hit – her film The Housemaid was a big success. Despite some public controversy, Sweeney is a very talented actress, as demonstrated by her performance in Sharp Objects.
What Is Sharp Objects About?
The HBO series Sharp Objects is based on Gillian Flynn’s 2006 novel of the same name. Amy Adams delivers a standout performance as Camille Preaker, a journalist struggling with deep emotional issues. The series opens with Camille leaving a psychiatric hospital, and it quickly becomes clear she copes with trauma through self-harm.
When Camille returns to her hometown of Wind Gap, Missouri, to investigate the deaths of two teenage girls, she moves back in with her mother, Adora. Living with Adora, a controlling and difficult woman, is incredibly stressful for Camille. As she digs into the case, Camille is forced to revisit painful memories and begins to suspect the killer might be someone she knows.
While Adams and Clarkson rightfully received most of the praise and Emmy nominations for their acting, the younger actresses in the show were equally impressive alongside these experienced stars. Eliza Scanlen delivers a chilling performance as Camille’s troubled half-sister, Amma, and Sweeney consistently shines in every scene she appears in.
Sharp Objects Played A Formative Role In Sydney Sweeney’s Career
In the series Sharp Objects, Sydney Sweeney portrays Alice, a fellow patient at the psychiatric hospital where Camille is staying. Alice is only 16, much younger than Camille’s 30 years. Though initially distant due to their age difference, they develop a close, sisterly bond, making Alice’s eventual suicide particularly heartbreaking for Camille.
One of the smartest changes the Sharp Objects miniseries made from the book was expanding Alice’s story. In the novel, her heartbreaking background is just briefly mentioned, but the show gives her a whole arc. Honestly, weaving in so much flashback could have bogged down Camille’s present-day investigation, which is so gripping. But Amy Adams – I mean, Patricia Sweeney – is phenomenal. She makes Alice such a powerful emotional center that she becomes just as crucial to unraveling the mystery as the murder itself.
Before landing the role in Sharp Objects, Sydney Sweeney was known for the teen comedy Everything Sucks!, a show that was generally lighthearted despite having some serious moments. However, with Sharp Objects and The Handmaid’s Tale – both of which she appeared in around the same time – Sweeney proved she was incredibly skilled at portraying complex, troubled characters and handling dark, challenging subject matter.
Sydney Sweeney really shone as Cassie Howard in Euphoria. It would have been easy for that character to feel a little flat, but Sweeney brought so much to the role. While we saw her comedic side in The White Lotus, she clearly has a knack for darker material, which really fit the unsettling vibe of Euphoria. And honestly, looking at her best movies – Immaculate, Christy, and The Housemaid – they all have that same haunting quality as her incredible performance in Sharp Objects. It’s like she consistently gravitates towards these complex, troubled characters, and she absolutely nails them.
Sharp Objects Is HBO’s Best & Most Underrated Thriller
HBO’s Sharp Objects benefited from the talents of writer Gillian Flynn, creator Marti Noxon, and director Jean-Marc Vallée. Noxon, known for her work as showrunner on Buffy the Vampire Slayer seasons 6 and 7, brought a fittingly dark tone to Sharp Objects – a style that proved particularly effective in portraying the show’s complex female characters, mirroring some of the critiques and strengths of her earlier work.
Jean-Marc Vallée is also well-known for directing the popular HBO series Big Little Lies. He brings a strong sense of atmosphere to both shows. Similar to how the wealthy seaside town in Big Little Lies felt like a character itself, the intense, Southern Gothic setting of Sharp Objects heightened the suspense, making viewers feel the oppressive Missouri heat.
“Sharp Objects” is a captivating show that deeply explores the emotional scars of its characters. This careful, deliberate approach makes the eventual reveal of the killer, and the final surprising twist, much more powerful than it would have been in a typical, quickly-paced mystery.
Despite strong reviews and promotion from HBO, Sharp Objects didn’t become a major pop culture phenomenon. This might be because interest in domestic thrillers, which were very popular throughout the 2010s, was starting to decline by 2018 when the show aired.
It’s unfortunate that such a great show might be overlooked, but Sharp Objects isn’t just a good thriller—it’s a perfect example of domestic noir. The HBO miniseries is filled with a sense of dread, from the oppressive atmosphere of Camille’s family home to Sydney Sweeney’s captivating performance. It’s a show you’ll want to tell everyone about, even though its unsettling scenes will stay with you long after you finish watching.
