Christian Bale, though very British, understands the feeling behind a polite, sympathetic dismissal. He first gained recognition for his role in the 2000 film American Psycho, directed by Mary Harron, based on Bret Easton Ellis’s novel. Now, director Luca Guadagnino is planning a new adaptation of the story. Bale told The Hollywood Reporter at a recent premiere for his film The Bride that he thoroughly enjoyed working on the original. He remembers making the film with Harron many years ago as a fantastic experience. While Bale was primarily known for Newsies at the time, he wasn’t Lionsgate’s initial choice for the intense role. However, Harron ultimately cast him, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Bale commented on someone attempting a project – whether it’s a remake or something else entirely – and wished them well. He finished by saying he admires those who are courageous.
Luca Guadagnino’s film adaptation was announced in October 2024, with a screenplay co-written by Scott Z. Burns (known for Contagion) and the author of the original story. Since then, little news has emerged about who will star in the movie. While Austin Butler was once considered for the lead role, those plans didn’t come to fruition. The author recently mentioned on his podcast that several well-known actors declined the part, possibly because they didn’t want to be compared to Christian Bale’s iconic performance. Ultimately, they need an actor willing to take on the challenge.
