The Rookie Season 8 Ep 9 Review: A Quirky Episode Makes Room for Heavy Drama & Big Changes

The extensive search strained resources at the Mid-Wilshire police division. The episode “Fun and Games” offered a lighter tone after the fast-paced events of Season 8, with the cast delivering great comedic performances as the ‘straight men’ in humorous scenes. However, the inclusion of a failed bank robbery and romantic storylines might have distracted some viewers from the comedy.

This week’s episode included a memorable segment that many viewers found to be the highlight of the hour. It featured Sam Reich and members of his online group as part of a central mystery. This was a clever move that could introduce both shows to new audiences. Elsewhere in the episode, Nyla Harper returned to duty and began training new recruits, taking over from Miles Penn. Their dynamic was a bit strange, but that seemed to be intentional. Finally, the episode’s main romantic storyline took an unexpected turn, focusing on a different couple than the popular ‘Chenford’ pairing or even John Nolan and Bailey Nune’s relationship troubles.

The Rookie Filled the Episode With Humor, but Still Left Room for Emotional Drama

Although the crossover with Dropout was arguably better than previous ones, the episode wasn’t consistently funny throughout. It was unexpected to reveal Reich as the one behind the “crime,” even if he didn’t mean to do it. The funniest parts of the episode were watching Nolan and Celina Juarez interact with the comedians from Dropout. The main cast did a good job of playing it straight and acting frustrated, which allowed the guest comedians to shine.

The somewhat tense relationship between Harper and Penn seemed to be played for laughs, but it didn’t quite hit the mark for some viewers. Both characters are facing real consequences at work with the LAPD. While Penn’s sincere efforts to redeem himself were often funny, the pairing of Harper and Penn might frustrate some fans more than amuse them.

The bank robbery call Penn and Harper responded to turned out to be a tragic event. A security guard shot a young couple, and one of them later died. Adding to the complexity, the surviving partner’s grandmother was involved in the crime. Like many desperate situations, the couple was deeply in debt. Separately, the story of two amateur gun makers, presented as comical, hinted at relationship problems that lessened the comedic effect.

Big Romantic Problems Hit Two of the Most Unexpected Characters, but It Was a Long Time Coming

The show hinted at a character’s potential departure for years, whether from the series or due to personal issues. It eventually focused on the latter when Luna developed feelings for a new doctor, Oliver Ashton (played by Charles Michael Davis). Throughout the episode, Wade suspected something was happening between them, and the episode culminated in a confrontation where Wade and Luna decided to separate.

Wade’s been less involved in the action this season after being reassigned, and his dedication to his work has always put a strain on his marriage. This year, Luna has focused on her own career, leading to a growing distance between them. While she briefly considered having an affair, their eventual split feels both natural, given their history, and unexpected, as they haven’t been a central couple on the show – which actually makes their storyline work well.

In the beginning, the show was still finding its footing. A consistent element from those early episodes was the clear animosity between Grey and Nolan. Even now, long-time fans might be surprised to see Nolan is the one Grey calls after arguing with Luna. This makes sense because Grey and Nolan are around the same age, and Nolan recently went through a divorce before joining the police force. As the show delves into Grey’s marital problems, it also creates an opportunity for him to build a stronger bond with Nolan, potentially securing Nolan’s place on the show even after his time with the Task Force is over.

The Rookie Continues to Explore Its Characters While Playing With the Show’s Format

A major mystery surrounding Officer Nolan’s past has finally started to be revealed. It seems his father likely died due to problems with alcohol, and their last interaction was unusually difficult. The show recently introduced Nolan’s mother, and although she doesn’t live with him anymore, they’re working on improving their relationship. Instead of causing trouble for Nolan’s blossoming romance with Lucy Chen, these family developments are actually strengthening their connection, which fans are sure to be happy about.

The biggest change involves Officer Harper returning to regular patrol duties and training new recruits. This decision cleverly keeps the show’s original format alive, even though Officer Penn is no longer the “newbie.” Since Penn will be in training for another six months, Harper likely won’t be on the job for that long. This shift not only revitalizes the series, but also allows Nolan to partner with different officers, such as Juarez and Chen. Nolan excels at mentoring young officers, but it’s also nice to see him interact with other members of the team.

Now that Harper is helping train Penn, Nolan has more time to focus on the Task Force and work alongside Grey. This change in how the show utilizes its actors keeps things interesting and allows for fresh pairings. It’s a good way to maintain strong viewership by offering unexpected moments while still staying true to the show’s core strengths. Although the mix of comedy and drama in the episode “Fun and Games” wasn’t perfect, it demonstrated the cast’s versatility.

The Rookie debuts new episodes Mondays at 10 PM on ABC and streams on Hulu the following morning.
