Get ready for more treasure hunting! Nicolas Cage is set to return as Ben Gates in a new National Treasure movie. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently shared that the third film in the series is still being developed, offering fans a hopeful sign that it’s moving forward.
At the Producer’s Guild Awards in Los Angeles this weekend, Jerry Bruckheimer shared an update on the next Bad Boys movie. He told The Direct that the script is still being written, but development is progressing nicely.
This isn’t the first time producer Jerry Bruckheimer has given updates about the new National Treasure movie. He previously mentioned in September that he wants Nicolas Cage to return as Ben Gates, and that Jon Turteltaub, the director of the original National Treasure films, is also planned to return to direct.
“We’re getting closer on that one,” he told The Wrap.
Nicolas Cage Previously Shut Down the Possibility of Another National Treasure Movie
Although producer Jerry Bruckheimer wants Nicolas Cage to star in another film where his character steals historical documents, Cage has previously been unsure about making a third National Treasure movie. He didn’t appear in the short-lived National Treasure TV series, and when asked about a third film in 2024, he was direct about whether it was happening.
He confirmed to ScreenRant that National Treasure 3 isn’t happening. He jokingly advised fans that if they’re looking for real treasure, they shouldn’t count on Disney to have it.
National Treasure’s First Two Films Were Commercial Smashes for Disney
Despite recent comments from both Nicolas Cage and Jerry Bruckheimer, the original film and its sequel were huge financial successes for Disney. The first movie earned $347.5 million, and the second brought in $459.2 million at the box office.
Both National Treasure movies made more than three times their production costs back, but critics had mixed reactions. The original film, with a 47% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, was appreciated for its exciting idea, but many found it dull, full of plot issues, and criticized Nicolas Cage’s performance as the main character.
The second National Treasure movie, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, also received poor reviews. It currently has a 35% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics criticizing its confusing plot and underutilization of its talented cast. Both National Treasure films boasted a strong ensemble cast, including Nicolas Cage, Jon Voight, and Diane Kruger.
You can now watch all three National Treasure movies—National Treasure, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, and National Treasure: Edge of History—on Disney+.
