The Mummy 4 directors explain why Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is no longer canon

Good news for fans of The Mummy! Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are both set to return for a fourth movie. However, if ‘Tomb of the Dragon Emperor‘ is your favorite, this new installment might not follow that storyline.

The Mummy remains a popular film from the 1990s, and people still enjoy its fun mix of action, adventure, comedy, and scary moments.

Honestly, one of the best things about the original Mummy was how great Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz were together – they just had amazing chemistry! It’s no surprise they both came back to make The Mummy Returns, they were perfect for those roles.

Rachel Weisz didn’t appear in the third Mummy film, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor; Maria Bello took over the role of Evelyn Carnahan instead. This surprised many fans, and now the creators of the fourth Mummy movie face a significant choice about who will play the character going forward.

Rachel Weisz returning means The Mummy 3 isn’t canon

Many viewers found it strange to see a new actress portraying Brendan Fraser’s wife in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, so Entertainment Weekly asked the directors of a potential Mummy 4 movie, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, if that film is still considered part of the official storyline.

Gillett mentioned Rachel is involved, and Bettinelli-Olpin quickly added that settles the question. The question, apparently, was whether she wasn’t.

It’s happened before with movie franchises: sometimes they disregard what came before. For example, the 2018 Halloween movie completely reset the timeline, and Terminator: Dark Fate did something similar to its series just a year later.

Because of this, it’s probably safe to say that characters from The Mummy 3 won’t be appearing in the next installment, The Mummy 4.

Directors call Mummy 4 script “beautiful and scary”

The directors explained that Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz agreed to return for the long-awaited sequel because of the compelling script written by Dave Coggeshall.

Gillett describes the screenplay as stunning, intense, and epic, calling it ‘awesome.’ Bettinelli-Olpin emphasizes that Brendan and Rachel wouldn’t sign on unless they truly loved the script, and he believes their positive reaction speaks to its quality. He’s confident the film will be a lot of fun to make.

A fourth Mummy movie is currently planned for release in 2028. Here’s a look at the best new films playing in theaters and available for streaming this month.
