The announcement of Prime Video’s God of War series generated a lot of excitement, given the huge popularity of the original video games. However, even without a trailer or confirmed release date, the show is already sparking debate and splitting fans, which is a concerning sign for a project with so much anticipation.
Now that Amazon is making a God of War show and a remake of the original Greek trilogy is coming, the God of War franchise is arguably at its peak. While the earlier games were well-received, the 2018 reboot and its sequel, God of War: Ragnarök, were huge successes, signaling a very promising future for the series.
Fans were thrilled by the unexpected release of God of War: Sons of Sparta, and recent leaks about God of War 6 have kept the conversation going, creating a lot of anticipation for the upcoming Prime Video show. However, despite the initial excitement, the first official images of the adaptation have caused some concern among viewers.
Amazon Has Officially Shared A First Look At God Of War
Fans of God of War have finally gotten a first look at the upcoming live-action series, which was first announced back in December 2022. The released image shows Ryan Hurst as Kratos watching Callum Vinson’s Atreus while they hunt in a forest – a scene that mirrors the beginning of the God of War reboot game.
Prime Video’s upcoming series will be based on Norse mythology, and is expected to closely follow the stories of the 2018 video game and its sequel. While there will likely be some changes and additions to the plot, it’s aiming for a similar storytelling style to HBO’s The Last of Us, rather than Amazon’s Fallout.
It’s great that the show stays true to the games, particularly since they were so well-received for their story and ideas. However, this also means that Ryan Hurst, who plays Kratos in the series, will inevitably be compared to Christopher Judge, the original voice actor who has even said he’d like to play the character in a live-action adaptation.
Since Ben Hurst already voices Thor in God of War: Ragnarök, many believe he’d be a natural choice to play Kratos, and the game’s director, Cory Barlog, seems to agree. Hurst’s physical stature also makes him a convincing Kratos, although not everyone is convinced he’s right for the role.
It’s probably too soon to form a solid opinion about Florence Pugh’s performance, considering we haven’t heard her speak as Princess Aurora yet. Still, people online are already sharing their thoughts, and opinions are quite divided.
Why God Of War’s First Image Sparked Mixed Reactions
Because the God of War show is based on a beloved video game series, it was bound to face a lot of criticism. The first released image sparked complaints, mostly focusing on whether the actors accurately resemble the characters fans imagined.
I have to say, while Hurst has the height to pull off Kratos, he doesn’t quite have the sheer mass. And that’s important! Kratos isn’t just strong, he looks overwhelmingly powerful. Think about it – this guy has taken down gods and monstrous creatures, and a lot of that impact comes from his incredible physique. You need to see that raw strength to believe he could accomplish those feats, and Hurst just doesn’t quite fill out the role in that way.
Casting an actor to play this role was always going to be difficult, and some fans weren’t immediately convinced by the initial portrayal of Kratos. While the feedback on Callum Vinson as Atreus has been generally more positive, some viewers still feel he doesn’t quite fit the character.
Based on the first image, many fans felt the overall look and feel didn’t quite match the style of God of War. Some thought the colors needed work, and others even suggested it looked like it was created using AI. However, the costume design received a lot of positive feedback, and many people liked how the characters appeared together.
When first seeing images like these, people often react strongly, and that reaction is valuable. The success of Prime Video’s Fallout demonstrates that a God of War adaptation can succeed, as the platform has a proven track record with video game series. If a few changes are made to address concerns from some viewers, this adaptation still has a lot of potential.
Kratos Actor Ryan Hurst Commented On The Fan Reception
Following the strong reaction to the show, Ryan Hurst quickly responded to criticism with a firm statement. He’s a clear fan of both the original God of War and the new adaptation, and he’s confident in the work he and Prime Video are doing. He shared this sentiment by tweeting, “Don’t believe everything you see on the internet, kids.”
Since the photo is official, Hurst likely isn’t questioning whether it’s real. He’s probably suggesting this is an early version – perhaps a behind-the-scenes shot or a test – and the final show will look quite different once visual effects, lighting, and other details are added.
Even if this was a deliberate marketing tactic, Prime Video still bears some responsibility for the initial reaction. However, the showrunner’s assurance that the God of War adaptation will meet fan expectations should be reassuring. Now, the real challenge is to deliver a series that lives up to the hype.
