Superman’s James Gunn Confirms Another Villain Returning With Lex Luthor In Man Of Tomorrow, And Now I Have A Question About The Wider DCU

With *Superman* now available to stream on HBO Max and buy digitally or on disc, more details are emerging about *Man of Tomorrow*, the sequel planned for 2025. Beyond the news that Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor will reluctantly join forces with David Corenswet’s Superman against a major enemy, writer and director James Gunn has revealed another returning villain for the new DC film. This news raises some interesting questions about the future of the DC Universe franchise.

The Engineer Is Returning In Man of Tomorrow

During the commentary for the movie *Superman* (as reported by ComicBookMovie), director James Gunn revealed that María Gabriela de Faría’s character, Angela Spica (also known as The Engineer), will play a role in the next film, *Man of Tomorrow*. Her ultimate fate was left somewhat ambiguous at the end of *Superman*, and Gunn intends to resolve that storyline in what is currently planned to be the fourth movie in the DC Universe.

Superman knocked The Engineer unconscious, which means she won’t be appearing in this film anymore. Her fate will be revealed in the next movie.

Engineer was one of Lex Luthor’s top agents, alongside Ultraman, during the events of *Superman*. Ultraman was ultimately pulled into a black hole and appears to be gone for good-though in DC Comics, that’s never certain. However, Engineer was just left unconscious under a baseball stadium in Metropolis. Her fate remains a mystery.

We’ll find out the answer to that question in less than two years. But just seeing Engineer included in the *Man of Tomorrow* story makes me think about what it means for one of the earliest DC Universe movies we heard about. I suspect longtime DC fans already have an idea where I’m headed with this.

Where Do Things Stand With The Authority?

Before Superman, I mostly knew The Engineer as this really cool, powerful member of The Authority – a superhero team that started over in DC’s Wildstorm universe before becoming part of the main DC storyline. When DC announced their initial movie plans back in 2023, *The Authority* was one of the films they had in development. But almost three years later, we haven’t heard a peep about it. Now that I’m seeing The Engineer pop up in *Man of Tomorrow*, I’m starting to wonder if that’s a good sign for *The Authority* movie, or if it means the project might be stalled.

More on Man of Tomorrow

James Gunn recently talked about how his upcoming film, ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ will offer a fresh take on Superman, but what really excites fans are his ideas for the future of Lex Luthor.

Okay, so James Gunn’s been talking about his new Superman movie, and it’s fascinating! He’s really emphasizing how his version, ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ isn’t just another retelling of the Superman story we all know. But honestly, what *really* got me excited was hearing his ideas for Lex Luthor. He’s clearly got a vision for the character that feels fresh and potentially amazing, and I’m seriously counting down the days to see how it all plays out. It’s not just about Superman; it’s about building a compelling villain too, and Gunn seems to *get* that.

James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios with Peter Safran, mentioned in March that plans for *The Authority* were paused. This was because they were rethinking the overall story and wanted to ensure it felt distinct from shows like *The Boys*, which had similar comic book origins. Last month, Gunn added that finding a good fit for these characters within the new DC Universe has been challenging, much like with the character Static. While integrating Engineer into the DCU seemed to work well, Gunn is still figuring out how to include the rest of her team.

It’s possible James Gunn wrote *Man of Tomorrow* with a future role for María Gabriela de Faría’s character in *The Authority* in mind. Alternatively, *The Authority* might not happen at all, and Gunn simply wants to keep her character, The Engineer, around for other projects. For example, if Brainiac is the main villain in *Man of Tomorrow*, he could have captured Angela and is now controlling her.

Fans can look forward to seeing Engineer return in *Man of Tomorrow*, scheduled for release on July 9, 2027. Before that, *Supergirl*, the next film in the DC Universe, will hit theaters on June 26, 2026.
