I’m so excited – we’re just weeks away from seeing Thomas Shelby back in action with the Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man movie on Netflix! But while we wait, it’s the perfect time to revisit the original Peaky Blinders series. Created by Steven Knight and starring Cillian Murphy, it really changed the game for crime dramas. Six seasons later, people are still obsessed – and that’s why they’re making a movie, right?
While Peaky Blinders is set in the early 1900s, this show is set in present-day London. Despite the different setting, it still offers the same intense atmosphere and thrilling storylines that fans of Steven Knight’s work enjoy. Plus, with three seasons already available, it’s a great choice to watch while you wait for Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man.
‘Gangs of London’ Is ‘Peaky Blinders’ Spiritual Successor
The thrilling series Gangs of London follows Sean Wallace (Joe Cole), the son of a powerful and feared crime boss. After his father (Colm Meaney) is killed, the criminal organization is thrown into chaos, creating an opportunity for competing gangs to seize control. A violent battle for power begins, and Cole must fight to protect his family’s reputation and hold onto what’s left of their empire.
Featuring a fantastic cast including Paapa Essiedu, Sope Dirisu, Lucian Msamati, and Michelle Fairley, Gangs of London is a truly excellent crime thriller that deserves more attention. It hasn’t reached a wide audience, likely because it’s available on AMC+, which isn’t as well-known as some other streaming platforms.
This show feels like a spiritual successor to Peaky Blinders, exploring similar ideas but in a contemporary context. Both series center on powerful, criminal families with uncompromising leaders, and they both portray organized crime as a calculated business venture. While Gangs of London is more visually intense, both shows use violence to represent the struggle for control.
‘Gangs of London’ Will Continue
Gangs of London, created by Gareth Evans and Matt Flannery, draws inspiration from the 2006 video game of the same name. While it shares some similarities with Peaky Blinders, it’s more visually stylized due to its video game origins, but remains a compelling story.
If you’ve been holding back from watching Gangs of London because you don’t want to get hooked on a show that leaves you hanging, don’t worry! Season 4 is already being filmed. That’s great news, especially after the intense Season 3 and its incredible finale – we’re all eager to see what happens next. The season starts and finishes with major events, so binge-watch the whole series now on AMC+!
