The movie Yesterday, starring Ana de Armas, is coming to HBO Max on March 27th. Many consider this film to be underrated.
The new film Ballerina is a spin-off set between John Wick: Chapter 3 and Chapter 4. It expands on the world of the Ruska Roma assassins briefly featured in the third John Wick movie. Ana de Armas plays Eve Macarro, a woman driven by revenge for her father’s death. The film also includes returning cast members like Anjelica Huston, Lance Reddick, and Ian McShane from previous John Wick films.
Ballerina Delivers the High-Octane Action John Wick Fans Love
In the movie Ballerina, viewers watch Ana de Armas’ character, Eve, start her training as an assassin with the Ruska Roma. Things quickly become dangerous when her first mission puts her on the run from a ruthless crime syndicate that kills for pleasure. Throughout her journey, she also uncovers the truth behind the mysterious cult that murdered her father.
Even though Ballerina isn’t as well-known as the main John Wick movies, it still delivers the same exciting action and style fans expect. Critics and audiences generally liked the film, showing it stood on its own merits and wasn’t just relying on the popularity of the John Wick franchise.
Critics generally like the film Ballerina, giving it a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating of 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on over 300 reviews. However, audiences love it even more, with 92% of over 5,000 viewers giving it a positive rating. Reviewers praise Ana de Armas as a captivating action star and describe the movie as a strong addition to the John Wick universe, offering a fresh and exciting take on action and suspense.
However, the film’s performance wasn’t a huge success. It earned $137.2 million in theaters, while its production cost was $90 million. It struggled to attract audiences because it was released alongside two very popular movies: Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which were both doing extremely well.
Ballerina Redeemed Itself on Streaming After Flopping at the Box Office
Although Ballerina didn’t earn as much money as the other John Wick movies, the spin-off has unexpectedly become popular after being released on streaming services last year. It first appeared on Peacock in November 2025, and then gained even more traction when it became a hit on Prime Video in January 2026.
As a huge fan of the John Wick universe, I’m really curious to see how Ballerina does on HBO Max. Even though the last John Wick movie didn’t quite hit the mark at the box office, I’m totally confident the franchise has a ton of life left in it. They’ve got a new film starring Caine in the works, and Lionsgate already gave the go-ahead to another animated project with Keanu Reeves reprising his role – that’s awesome!
Ballerina arrives on HBO Max on March 27.
