The main characters from Gen V will be back for the last season of The Boys, but it’s still unclear if Gen V will get another season beyond the second one. If it doesn’t, the revival of the Stephen King sci-fi thriller could be a great replacement.
Spin-off shows often feel like unnecessary additions to popular franchises. But Gen V is a rare exception. It successfully builds on the world of its parent show, The Boys, while also creating its own unique story. In fact, some storylines in Gen V are even more engaging and relatable than those in The Boys itself.
As of now, Prime Video hasn’t announced whether Gen V will return for a third season. If you enjoyed the show and are looking for something similar, a new Stephen King TV series explores comparable themes and concepts.
Gen V May Not Return With Another Season, But MGM+’s The Institute Fills The Void
If you enjoyed Gen V and its take on teens with superpowers, you should definitely check out the MGM+ adaptation of Stephen King’s The Institute. The first part of The Institute shares a similar premise to Gen V season 1: a hidden group kidnapping children with special abilities and running experiments on them, all in the name of what they believe is the greater good.
As a huge fan of both shows, I’ve noticed a really striking parallel between Gen V and The Institute. In Gen V, all the secret, messed-up stuff is happening right underneath Godolkin University – it’s crazy! And The Institute has this similar hidden system operating just outside of town. What’s really chilling in both is watching these young characters being put through brutal experiments, and then finally reaching their breaking point and deciding to fight back against the people who did this to them. It’s a really powerful, and disturbing, theme.
Compared to The Institute, Gen V is a much more visually impressive and ambitious show. It also has an advantage because it’s connected to The Boys, which is considered one of the best sci-fi series in recent years.
Like The Institute, this story explores what happens when institutions fail and young people are left to cope with the consequences of adult failures. Good news for fans: The Institute has been picked up for another season, scheduled to arrive in 2026.
While nothing can truly fill the void left by Gen V ending, Stephen King’s The Institute is a good option for fans looking for something similar to watch.
Gen V Must Continue Even After The Boys Ends
Given that Gen V is connected to the world of The Boys, it’s logical that the show will conclude around the same time. With The Boys season 5 being its last, we can expect significant character deaths. This could unfortunately include the young superheroes from Gen V when they face off against Homelander and his followers.
If that happens, it would not make a lot of sense for Gen V to return.
While the show could introduce a new group of young superheroes, it wouldn’t be quite the same without the original characters Cate, Marie, Emma, Jordan, and Sam. If any of the young heroes from Gen V make it through season 5 of The Boys, it would be interesting to see how their stories continue as the world tries to recover from Homelander’s rule.
With no news yet on a third season of Gen V, fans will have to turn to MGM+’s series based on Stephen King’s The Institute while they wait for the fifth season of The Boys.
