The upcoming Super Mario Galaxy movie could introduce another famous villain from the Mario universe, and some fans may have already heard hints of their involvement. The 2023 Super Mario Bros. Movie established Bowser as a major enemy of Mario, mirroring their classic rivalry from the video games.
The new movie adds a fresh character, Bowser Jr., who is voiced by Benny Safdie. The trailer shows Bowser Jr. going after Mario and Luigi, trying to save his father, who has been magically shrunk and is being held captive in a tiny version of his castle.
The movie also features lots of well-known Mario characters like Yoshi, Rosalina, and Birdo. Plus, a surprise villain from the games might appear, potentially explaining a mysterious voice heard in the first trailer.
Wario May Have Been Spoiled For The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
While trailers for The Super Mario Bros. Movie have introduced Bowser Jr. as a villain, there’s a possibility another famous Mario enemy will appear. IGN reports that the Everyman cinema chain in the UK included Wario in their movie description. Here’s what that description stated:
Having already rescued Brooklyn from Bowser, Mario now confronts a new threat: a team-up between Wario and Bowser Jr. With the help of his friends and Yoshi, he needs to foil their scheme to take over the world.
Wario debuted in 1992’s Super Mario Land 2: Golden Coins as a competitor to Mario. He’s since become a playable character in popular games like Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros., and has starred in his own series, including Wario Land and WarioWare.
It’s a bit unexpected to see Wario included, since he wasn’t in Super Mario Galaxy, but the movie is pulling from various Mario games. A partnership between Bowser Jr. and Wario would be fun – we don’t often see that dynamic in the games. And if Wario’s in the film, it raises the possibility of a surprise appearance by Waluigi!
Wario’s Voice May Have Been Heard In The First Trailer
Okay, so everyone’s buzzing about whether Wario will show up in The Super Mario Movie, and if he does, who could be him? The internet seems convinced Danny DeVito would be perfect, and honestly, he didn’t exactly shut down the idea when asked about it. But here’s the interesting part: Jack Black, who absolutely kills it as Bowser, threw out another name – Pedro Pascal! I have to say, that’s a surprisingly brilliant suggestion, and now I’m desperately hoping we get that casting. Both options would be fantastic, but Pascal would be a really fun, unexpected choice.
It’s possible we’ve already heard Wario’s voice. In the initial trailer, Rosalina is attacked by a Megaleg robot who says, “Princess Rosalina, you’re coming with me,” before being defeated. While the character speaking hasn’t been officially identified, the voice strongly resembles that of actor Brad Garrett.
Garrett is a well-known actor and comedian, most famously recognized for his role in the sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond. Beyond live-action roles and stand-up, he’s also a successful voice actor, having lent his voice to popular animated films like Finding Nemo, Ratatouille, Tangled, Christopher Robin, and Elio.
Wario usually sounds higher-pitched in the games, but the voices for most other characters in Illumination’s Mario movies aren’t quite the same as their game counterparts. Garrett would give Wario a much deeper, more powerful voice, which would fit well if the character appears in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
