Uber app to add flying car rides as Dubai launch confirmed for 2026

Uber is bringing flying taxis to Dubai later this year. Through a collaboration with Joby Aviation, riders will be able to book all-electric flights right through the Uber app.

Uber is partnering with Joby to offer electric air taxi rides alongside regular Uber trips. Joby plans to begin carrying passengers in Dubai in late 2026 as part of its launch.

If a trip qualifies, Uber riders will see Uber Air as a transportation option when they open the app and enter their destination. The service will seamlessly combine street travel with air travel, offering options like Uber Black pickups and drop-offs to get you to and from your flight.

Uber Air aims to connect ground rides with electric air taxis

Joby’s aircraft can transport up to four people and will be flown by a professional pilot. The company highlights that the spacious cabin has big windows and is designed to be much quieter than a typical helicopter ride.

This aircraft takes off and lands straight up using six propellers that tilt, then rotate forward for regular flight. Joby, the company behind it, says it can fly up to 200 mph and travel 100 miles on a full charge.

Uber’s head of product, Sachin Kansal, explained that they want future air travel options to easily integrate with and feel just as convenient as using the current Uber app.

Kansal explained that Uber has always seen the potential of air travel to revolutionize city transportation. Uber Air will allow customers to easily book Joby’s electric air taxis with just one tap in the Uber app, creating a smooth and convenient connection between ground transportation and air travel.

Joby’s Head of Product, Eric Allison, explained that the collaboration aims to integrate air travel seamlessly into everyday city commutes.

I’m so excited about what Allison and her team are building! They’re not just making another way to get around cities, they’re really trying to create a totally new kind of transportation. What I love is that they’re prioritizing a quiet ride that feels like a natural part of the city, not something disruptive. It’s all about fitting into city life, and that’s a game-changer.

Dubai launch marks latest step in Uber and Joby partnership

I’ve been following the progress of flying cars for a while now, and it’s really cool to see how Uber and Joby have been working together since 2019! What’s even more interesting is that in 2021, Joby actually bought Uber’s Elevate team – they were the ones building the tools to figure out where these air taxis could work best and how they’d fit in with existing transportation like buses and trains.

The companies also shared their plans for growth. Last year, Uber and Joby announced that Blade’s helicopter service would be available on the Uber app in 2026, after Joby bought Blade’s passenger transport operations.

I’m so excited! Uber just announced Uber Air, and it’s going to be amazing! They’re teaming up with Joby Aviation to bring all-electric air taxis right into the Uber app this year. Seriously, flying taxis – the future is actually here!

Uber plans to bring its electric air taxi service to more cities—like New York, Los Angeles, the UK, and Japan—as soon as it gets the necessary permissions.

Joby needs to get approval from the Federal Aviation Administration before it can start offering its air taxi service in the US. The company reports it’s finished over 50,000 miles of test flights and is now in the last step of getting that approval.
