A professor at the University of Oxford has revealed the reason behind the viral sensation of a baby monkey named Punch. It seems your brain responds to him almost instantly, before you’re even consciously aware of it.
A baby macaque named Punch at Ichikawa City Zoo has become an internet sensation. Videos show him lovingly hugging a stuffed animal from IKEA and attempting to make friends with other monkeys, after being rejected by his mother.

Professor Morten L Kringelbach, a neuroscientist at the University of Oxford, has explained the brain activity that occurs when we watch adorable videos.
The science behind why we find Punch cute
The professor explained that when we see babies or young animals – like kittens or puppies – activity starts in the emotional center of our brain, called the orbitofrontal cortex, within just a seventh of a second. This happens so quickly that it’s before we’re even consciously aware of what we’re seeing.
Seeing something adorable naturally makes you react with pleasure – that’s just how humans are wired. But appreciating cuteness also opens the door to feeling empathy and compassion for others.
Honestly, my gut reaction to Punch is just instant – I immediately think he’s cute, and it happens way faster than I can even think about why. But Kringelbach pointed out that it’s more than just cuteness; there’s something about his whole story that really gets to me on a deeper level.
