Kiefer Sutherland’s 24 Replacement Becomes a PVOD Success 7 Years After Cancellation

I’m noticing a real buzz around Designated Survivor lately – it’s Kiefer Sutherland’s follow-up to 24, and honestly, it didn’t get the attention it deserved. But people are discovering it now, and it’s climbing the charts for on-demand rentals. Even better, the whole series is currently on sale for a limited time, so it’s a great chance to check it out if you missed it!

I’ve been following Designated Survivor, and I was so excited to see it suddenly climb the iTunes charts! According to FlixPatrol, it jumped into the Top 10 on February 24th, landing at number 5, and then actually moved up to number 4 the next day! It turns out all three seasons are on sale right now for just $9.99 – that’s a huge discount from the usual $39.99. If you’ve been thinking about watching or rewatching, now’s the perfect time to grab the box set before the sale ends this week!

Sutherland Stars as an Unlikely President in the Underrated Political Thriller

Many political dramas have come out over the years, but Sutherland’s Designated Survivor stands out with its original storyline. The show features Kiefer Sutherland as Thomas Kirkman, the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, who unexpectedly becomes President after a catastrophic attack destroys the Capitol Building during the State of the Union address, leaving him as the sole survivor.

Let me tell you about Designated Survivor. Alongside Kiefer Sutherland, the show boasted a really strong cast – Natascha McElhone, who you might recognize from Californication, Adan Canto, and Italia Ricci of Supergirl fame. It originally aired on ABC back in 2016, but sadly got canceled after just two seasons. Thankfully, Netflix stepped in and gave us a third season, but ultimately decided to stop there at three seasons. It’s a shame, because it had potential!

The show is unexpectedly finding success with paid video-on-demand purchases almost seven years after its last episode aired. While this likely won’t lead to a fourth season – all three seasons are already available on Netflix – it’s still remarkable. Many viewers already have access through their Netflix subscriptions, so choosing to buy it on iTunes is a surprising vote of confidence.

Designated Survivor is One of Sutherland’s Best Releases After 24

Although not as famous as 24, Designated Survivor has quietly become one of Kiefer Sutherland’s most successful shows. It currently has a 71% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and the first season was especially well-received, earning a ‘Certified Fresh’ score of 87%. Reviewers described the series as a thrilling and captivating political drama.

After Designated Survivor ended, Sutherland appeared in the 2020 action thriller The Fugitive, which was released on Quibi. In 2022, he played President Franklin D. Roosevelt in Showtime’s The First Lady, alongside an actress portraying Eleanor Roosevelt. His most recent role was in Paramount+’s spy thriller Rabbit Hole, where he starred as a spy wrongly accused of murder.

You can now buy Kiefer Sutherland’s show, Designated Survivor, on iTunes and watch it on Netflix.
