10/10 Anthologies Are Rare, But Guillermo del Toro’s 8-Part Netflix Horror Is Perfect From Start To Finish

There have been many excellent horror anthology series, but Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities stands out as one of the few on Netflix where every episode is genuinely good. It’s surprising how many other quality horror anthology shows have faded into obscurity over the years.

Many horror anthology series, like Monsterland and Fear Itself, are just as strong as classics such as Tales from the Crypt and Masters of Horror, but didn’t receive the same recognition. Guillermo del Toro created one of these, Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities, which premiered in 2022 around Halloween.

Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities Is An Iconic Horror Anthology Series

Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities begins each episode with the director introducing the story, similar to how Rod Serling famously started each episode of the original Twilight Zone. After that, though, anything can happen. The Netflix series features eight standalone stories, covering everything from eerie historical tales to intensely disturbing horror.

Guillermo Navarro’s “Lot 36” starts as a gripping crime thriller and slowly becomes truly frightening. Meanwhile, David Prior’s “The Autopsy,” from the director of The Empty Man, is a smart and disturbing film featuring only two actors. And Ana Lily Amirpour’s “The Outside” is a darkly humorous and shocking satire that surprisingly foreshadowed the themes of The Substance with its critique of the beauty industry.

Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities Adds A Killer Twist To The Horror Anthology Format

Keith Thomas and Catherine Hardwicke (known for Twilight) each bring a unique vision to Lovecraft’s tales in their episodes. Panos Cosmatos (Mandy) delivers a delightfully strange and dreamlike installment with “The Viewing.” The series takes one last turn in tone with “The Murmuring,” a beautiful and melancholic ghost story directed by Jennifer Kent (The Babadook).

Inspired by a story from Guillermo del Toro, “The Murmuring” is a spooky tale that also deeply explores themes of loss and sadness. Each episode is directed by a different filmmaker, giving the show a unique and ever-changing feel, which ultimately makes it surprisingly compelling.

Guillermo del Toro enjoyed M. Night Shyamalan’s series Servant, but it suffered from a common problem with TV horror: it’s hard to keep a consistently scary mood over many episodes or seasons. This makes shorter, self-contained horror shows – anthologies – a better fit for the format.

Why Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities Season 2 Still Hasn’t Happened

Many viewers enjoyed the first season of Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities and are now curious about a second season. While there hasn’t been an official announcement about whether the show will continue or not, its uncertain future isn’t surprising given the nature of anthology series.

With Guillermo del Toro currently focused on films like Frankenstein and other commitments, and needing to gather a new team of horror directors, it could be some time before Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities returns to Netflix.
