Sony is rebooting Spider-Man spinoff universe & Spider-Noir is the key to success

Unfortunately for fans of the movie Morbius, Sony is hitting the reset button on its universe of Spider-Man-related films. Following a series of underperforming movies, Sony Pictures CEO Tim Rothman announced they’re starting fresh. However, sources indicate the studio may already have a new direction in mind.

While the Venom movies were a big success, earning $1.5 billion globally, other recent Spider-Man-related films like Kraven the Hunter, Morbius, and Madame Web haven’t fared well – they all received negative reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and didn’t perform well in theaters.

In a recent appearance on The Town podcast, Rothman revealed the studio is restarting the franchise with a fresh cast and crew. He didn’t specify if this means revisiting the original stories and characters, or if they’re planning to use different Marvel heroes instead.

Sony might have already discovered the best way to build its Spider-Man universe of related films, and the Spider-Noir character could be central to its success.

Sony should bring more of the Spider-Verse into live action after Spider-Noir

The incredibly positive response to the Spider-Noir trailer shows Sony should explore the Spider-Verse more when they restart their Spider-Man spin-off films. While fans don’t need to see live-action versions of every alternate Spider-Man from the animated movies, it’s a great place to begin.

Nicolas Cage stars as Ben Reilly, a tough, private investigator who also fights crime as The Spider, in Prime Video’s Spider-Noir. This is the same character Cage voices in the Spider-Verse films. The new series appears to have a unique, dark, and stylish feel—something the previous villain-focused movies lacked.

Sony needs to prioritize making each of its projects stand out with a distinct feel. How they achieve this – through genre, setting, or visual style – will vary, but the Spider-Verse offers a rich source of inspiration they can continue to explore.

Sony is expanding its animated film universe, with a Venom animated movie and projects featuring Spider-Gwen and Spider-Punk currently being developed. Now, they need to apply the same strategy to their live-action films.

It would be exciting to see Sony pull stories and characters from different Spider-Man universes, almost like an anthology. They could even set up a big crossover event in a future Spider-Verse film. Sony has the potential to make its Spider-Man spin-off movies really stand out, but they need to be original and avoid simply imitating the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
