Scientists discover new cell that could unlock future hair loss treatments

Scientists have discovered a new cell type essential for growing hair. This breakthrough could lead to new ways to treat baldness and other hair loss conditions.

Japanese scientists have made a significant advancement in hair growth research. According to Nikkei, they were able to grow fully functional hair follicles in mice by introducing a newly identified type of cell, in addition to the two types already known to be crucial for hair growth.

Scientists used to think that growing hair required two specific types of cells working together. While combining these cells could start hair growth when transplanted into skin, the hair follicles weren’t fully formed unless surrounding tissue provided extra help.

Recent research has led to the discovery of cells within adult mouse hair follicles that help with hair regrowth. Using a special method, scientists were able to grow complete hair-producing structures in the lab by adding these cells – essentially a third important cell type – to the process.

If tests show this method is safe and works well in people, it could be used for more than just rare diseases – it might even help with typical hair loss due to aging or genetics. Researchers are aiming to start testing on people between late 2026 and 2027.

This new development comes as hair loss is gaining more attention as a social and political issue. For example, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has called hair loss treatment a critical concern for young men, highlighting how seriously it’s taken in some parts of the world.
