So, I just heard about this new app called ‘Nearby Glasses,’ and it’s pretty wild. Basically, it tells you if anyone around you is wearing smart glasses. It’s like a heads-up if someone’s recording or potentially tracking you, which is kinda creepy but also good to know, right?
Smart glasses are gaining popularity, especially with major companies like Meta investing in features like artificial intelligence and facial recognition. As more people start using them, concerns about privacy and data security are also growing.
Hidden cameras, like those found on phones and wearable devices, raise important ethical and legal questions – from privacy concerns to protecting children. Many people don’t want to be recorded without their knowledge, which is why Yves Jeanrenaud created a new app to address these issues.
Nearby Glasses is an app that alerts you if someone nearby appears to be wearing smart glasses, potentially recording you without your knowledge. It works by sending a notification to your phone when it detects these devices.
Detect nearby Smart Glasses with this new app
According to a report from 404 Media’s Joseph Cox, men have allegedly been using Meta’s Ray-Ban Smart Glasses to secretly record women at massage parlors. This follows previous coverage by the outlet on this issue.
After reading the story, Jeanrenaud started working on his app. The app is designed to warn you if someone nearby is recording audio without permission, as doing so is illegal.

The app works by searching for Bluetooth signals from specific devices. If it detects one of these signals nearby, you’ll receive a notification, allowing you to respond as needed.
The creator admits the app isn’t perfect. Sometimes it gets things wrong – for example, it might identify VR headsets as Smart Glasses. To be safe, the app warns users to be careful when approaching people wearing glasses, as the app’s warning could be about regular glasses, not Smart Glasses.
Jeanrenaud sees this as a small act of defiance against the growing use of surveillance technology. They believe it’s a technological fix for a problem created and made worse by technology itself.
The creator doesn’t want to speculate about what will happen, but he anticipates users might react negatively – possibly by telling people wearing smart glasses to go away, though he used stronger language to express that idea.
You can download the Nearby Glasses app on Google Play right now. However, it’s not yet available for iPhones or iPads.
