Rebecca Ferguson’s $53M Sci-Fi Mercy Is Finally Fighting for the Top of the PVOD Charts After Flopping in Theaters

Surprisingly, the sci-fi film with Rebecca Ferguson and Chris Pratt is finding some success online, despite receiving negative reviews from critics. While it struggled in theaters, it’s performing much better with digital audiences as March begins.

The movie Mercy wasn’t successful in theaters. While it made $53.5 million globally, it cost around $60 million to produce and even more to market, resulting in a loss for Amazon MGM Studios. Although it did briefly surpass Avatar: Fire and Ash in ticket sales, that achievement is somewhat misleading when looking at the film’s overall performance.

The film Mercy is now available to rent or buy online and has quickly become popular, ranking among the top 10 most streamed movies on both Prime Video and Apple TV. It even reached the No. 2 spot in the U.S.

The audience clearly enjoyed this movie much more than critics did. Viewers gave it an 83% rating, a full 58 percentage points higher than the critics’ score of 25% (which has slightly improved from an initial 20% after the film’s release in theaters).

Mercy Is Finding … Mercy … Through Streaming

Look, let’s be real – this movie stars Jennifer Ferguson and Chris Pratt, huge names everyone knows. But it’s tackling a story that, honestly, just doesn’t seem to be grabbing people right now, especially after everyone’s been stuck at home and their tastes have changed.

For much of the film, Pratt desperately tries to prove his innocence while stuck in a chair. Meanwhile, Ferguson, a star of huge franchises like Dune and Mission: Impossible, also sits in a chair and demands he save himself and clear his name in his wife’s murder. It’s a frustrating scene to watch – and the chair imagery is definitely intentional.

The disappointing performance of Ice Cube’s War of the Worlds on Prime Video taught us a valuable lesson: most viewers expect more action and visuals from a sci-fi movie than just two people staring at screens for almost two hours. It’s clear Ice Cube is better suited for roles that don’t heavily rely on acting alone.

Despite a disappointing initial release in theaters, the film has gained a following online, largely thanks to the strong performances of Ferguson and Pratt. If you go in with reasonable expectations, it’s definitely worth checking out.
