Here’s a quick look at the scores from Week 19 of Vulture’s Movies Fantasy League. While it’s too late to join for this season, you can still keep up with everything happening by visiting the league hub and signing up for our weekly newsletter.
The British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) were presented on Sunday, and the acting winners weren’t who many predicted. Jessie Buckley is still the favorite to win Best Actress for Hamnet, but the other acting categories saw some surprises. Sean Penn won Best Supporting Actor for his role in One Battle After Another, despite Jacob Elordi and Stellan Skarsgard winning other pre-BAFTA awards. Wunmi Mosaku from Sinners took home Best Supporting Actress, following wins by Amy Madigan and Teyana Taylor. The biggest surprise of the night was Robert Aramayo winning Best Actor for the British independent film I Swear, which isn’t released in the US until April. This win throws the Oscar race for Best Actor into question, as Timothée Chalamet, who was the front-runner, didn’t win at the BAFTAs.
As expected, One Battle After Another dominated the awards, winning top honors including Best Film and Best Director for Paul Thomas Anderson, as well as Best Supporting Actor for Penn, and awards for cinematography and editing. This brought their total MFL points to 180, significantly increasing their lead. Sinners also had a successful night, with wins for Mosaku, Ryan Coogler for Original Screenplay, and Ludwig Göransson for Best Original Score, earning them 90 MFL points. While many predict Sinners will excel in the technical categories at the Oscars, the BAFTAs favored Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, awarding it prizes for production design, costumes, and hair/makeup, totaling 60 MFL points.
At the awards, Hamnet won Best British Film, and Jessie Buckley also received an award. Sentimental Value was named Best Film in a language other than English, while Zootopia 2 unexpectedly took home the prize for Best Animated Film, beating out the unnominated KPop Demon Hunters. As anticipated, F1 won Best Sound, and the impressive visual effects in Avatar: Fire and Ash earned it that award as well.
Full list of BAFTA points:
Here’s a look at recent scores: One Battle After Another received a score of 180, followed by Sinners at 90. Frankenstein scored 60, and Hamnet received 55. Several titles tied with a score of 20, including Avatar: Fire and Ash, F1, Sentimental Value, and Zootopia 2.
Box Office
Box office gains are becoming very small. While Zootopia 2 and Avatar: Fire and Ash previously contributed significantly to bonus points, they now only add a few at a time. Marty Supreme and Hamnet are slowly approaching their next bonus levels, but probably won’t reach them without a significant increase in ticket sales. The biggest news this weekend was Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie earning another million dollars and a bonus point. Also, director Harry Lighton’s film Pillion reached the $1 million mark, earning it a point as well.
Here’s a rundown of how movies performed at the box office this weekend, showing total earnings in the U.S. and Canada so far:
Here’s a look at recent box office numbers for various films: Zootopia 2 earned $423 million, followed by Avatar: Fire and Ash with $399 million. The Housemaid brought in $126 million, while Marty Supreme made $95 million. Hamnet grossed $23 million, Sentimental Value earned $5 million, and both Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie and Pillion each made $2 and $1 million respectively.

Calendar
The Oscars are just under three weeks away, and there aren’t many awards shows left that could influence the outcome. This weekend, the Producers Guild will announce its Best Film winner on Saturday, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards will follow on Sunday. Everyone is watching Sinners, as the Producers Guild often favors popular, commercially successful films – something Sinners has over One Battle After Another. A win for Sinners in the Best Cast category at the SAG Awards would strongly suggest it has a good chance of winning the Oscar.
Here’s a quick look at the award season dates: The Producers Guild Awards will be held on February 28th, followed by the Actor Awards on March 1st. The Writers Guild Awards are scheduled for March 8th, and the 98th Academy Awards will conclude the season on March 15th.
