Four years after receiving negative reviews in theaters, the thriller Poker Face is about to be removed from Hulu. The 2022 film hasn’t performed well and is leaving the streaming platform.
Hulu will remove several movies next month, starting with The Triangle of Sadness on March 5th. Poker Face will be taken down on March 16th, followed by There There on March 15th, and Hunt on March 29th. All four films were originally released in 2022, according to a recent announcement from the streaming service.
What Is Poker Face About?
Directed and written by the same creator, Poker Face follows tech billionaire Jake Foley as he hosts a poker night with his old friends. What starts as a friendly game quickly escalates, and the group soon finds their secrets, fortunes, and even their lives at stake.
In the movie Poker Face, the main character is a CEO, and it boasts a strong supporting cast featuring Liam Hemsworth, RZA, Brooke Satchwell, and Elsa Pataky.
Even with a talented cast, the movie Poker Face was a major disappointment with both audiences and critics. It only earned $2.9 million in theaters and received overwhelmingly negative reviews, scoring a dismal 35% on Rotten Tomatoes’ audience reviews and a shockingly low 9% on the site’s critic reviews.
Critics found Poker Face‘s story confusing, and were disappointed by the weak female roles and unsatisfying conclusion. Many consider it one of the weakest films in Cameron Crowe’s career.
Making Poker Face Was ‘The Most Torturous 12 Months’ Of Crowe’s Life
Although audiences found Poker Face difficult to watch, the experience of making the film was equally challenging for Russell Crowe. At the Sydney premiere, Crowe described directing and starring in the movie as “one of the most difficult years of my life.”
Russell Crowe explained to Variety Australia that he was unexpectedly offered the chance to direct a film. He was told the project hadn’t been cast yet, the sets weren’t finished, and he’d have only five weeks to prepare. While directors usually have a year or more to plan, Crowe impulsively accepted the offer, later jokingly calling himself an idiot for doing so.
A series of unfortunate events, including floods and the COVID-19 pandemic, created immense pressure to accelerate the project’s timeline. Despite these challenges, Crowe successfully completed the film, highlighting the resilience and creative power inherent in filmmaking.
He explained that sometimes, with effort, you get an immediate result, confirming you’re on the right track. Despite not having much time to prepare, he realized he was approaching the project like painting. He believes audiences will understand this connection as the film’s story is revealed.
Poker Face is available to stream on Hulu until Mar. 16.
