Sisu Becomes an Instant Streaming Hit on Prime Video

Low-budget revenge movies are common, and most don’t get noticed. However, the revenge thriller unexpectedly became a big success.

Released in 2022, the film didn’t immediately find an audience on its streaming platform, overshadowed by a large number of new releases and licensed content. However, according to FlixPatrol, it eventually climbed into the top 10 near the end of the month.

A new revenge thriller joined the Top 10 this week, starting at number nine. It was joined by Katherine Heigl’s action comedy, One for the Money, which debuted at number ten.

The movie continues to perform well, currently ranking first at the box office. It’s followed by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, starring Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista. Additionally, Heads of State, featuring Idris Elba and John Cena, has re-entered the charts at number eight.

What Is Sisu About?

The Finnish movie Sisu takes place during the Lapland War, a conflict between Finland and Nazi Germany near the end of World War II. But the film isn’t focused on the war itself or valuable items; it’s about a man’s sheer determination to survive, fueled by pure stubbornness.

Sisu tells the story of Aatami Korpi, a former Finnish army commando and gold prospector, who finds a large gold deposit. He then must fight for his life against a ruthless Waffen-SS platoon and their cruel officer, who are determined to steal his find.

This war thriller presents its hero as an almost legendary figure, achieving incredible feats with seemingly effortless ease. Like John Wick, the main character defies realistic limits of endurance and healing, surviving injuries that would normally be fatal. He’s practically superhuman, brushing off damage that should kill an ordinary person.

The film Sisu became popular largely because of its over-the-top violence. It earned $11 million internationally, plus an additional $4.2 million from DVD and Blu-ray sales, according to The Numbers. With a budget of around $7.07 million (or €6 million), the war movie proved to be quite profitable.

While it didn’t achieve mainstream commercial success, the film has been critically acclaimed. It currently holds a 94% ‘Fresh’ rating from critics and an 88% audience score.

Sisu Received a Sequel

Following the success of their 2022 revenge thriller, writer and director Jalmari Helander teamed up once again with star Jorma Tommila for a sequel, Sisu: Road to Revenge, which was released in theaters on November 21, 2025.

Even though many people enjoyed Sisu: Road to Revenge, it wasn’t a financial success at the box office. Made for $12.2 million, the film only earned $9.8 million worldwide. Despite this, critics still praised it just as much, calling it a thrilling experience.

I’m so thrilled with how well the sequel is being received! Critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave it a fantastic 94% score, and it even earned the ‘Certified Fresh’ badge. Audiences seem to love it too, giving it an 87% rating – it’s almost as good as the first one! Everyone’s saying it’s a really fun and delightfully gory ride.

The movie is doing well in theaters, and it’s also popular for digital rental and purchase. Currently, it’s seventh on Amazon’s video-on-demand chart and eighth on Apple TV’s store.

Sisu is streaming on Prime Video.
