After almost five years since they first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Eternals might be featured in another MCU film.
Chloé Zhao, potentially directing a future Mission: Impossible film, helms Eternals. The movie centers on the Eternals, a group of immortal beings who’ve secretly lived on Earth for millennia, and their decision to come out of hiding to defend the planet from the Deviants, their dangerous and ancient enemies.
The 2021 superhero film, part of the fourth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, left viewers on a major cliffhanger. Sersi, Phastos, and Kingo were transported into a strange space by the Celestial being Arishem, who warned that humanity’s fate would be decided based on whether the Eternals’ memories proved humans deserved to live.
Where will the Eternals appear next in the MCU?
Although a second Eternals movie hasn’t been announced, it seems the team will appear in the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars. According to insider James Mack, one Eternal is currently planned to be part of the film.
Mack didn’t share which Eternals might appear in the upcoming Secret Wars. Although some Eternals died in the 2021 film, because Secret Wars involves the multiverse, any of them could return as alternate versions of themselves.
Despite their introduction in ‘Eternals’, none of the characters have shown up in a live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe film or series yet. While a zombie version of Ikaris briefly appeared in the ‘Marvel Zombies’ animated show, and Kingo (played by Kumail Nanjiani) returned in an episode of ‘What If…?’ season 3, those stories don’t fit within the main MCU timeline.
A recent appearance of the character Eternal in Secret Wars suggests Marvel Studios isn’t quite finished with its MCU characters. However, fans hoping for resolution to the cliffhanger from the 2021 film will probably be let down, as this new appearance doesn’t seem to offer any answers.
