A baby giraffe at the Memphis Zoo became an internet sensation after a funny standoff with an ostrich in the next pen. The two animals seemed to have a staring contest!

When you go to the zoo, you might notice animals staring back at you, seemingly confused by your presence. It’s not uncommon to see videos online of children getting worried when a gorilla or lion keeps looking at them.

Recently, a funny rivalry at the Memphis Zoo – a staring contest between two animals – has become very popular online.

A baby giraffe named Rahisi at the zoo started a staring contest with the ostriches in the next enclosure. The zoo shared the cute encounter on Instagram, saying, “Rahisi has met the neighbors!”

A zookeeper captured a short video that’s quickly spreading online, and people are loving the cute interaction it shows.

People playfully commented on the giraffe’s standoff, with one joking it was a ‘battle of the long necks’ to see who would blink first. Others asked who won the ‘staring contest,’ and one viewer related it to the experience of being surpassed in height by their own child.

Someone else commented, “This is the only moment they’ll agree, haha.” Then they added, “The other person thinks they’re tough, but I could easily beat them.”

People on social media have also been closely watching other interactions between animals at zoos.

A baby monkey named Punch has captured hearts online after his mother sadly abandoned him. He’s become very attached to a stuffed orangutan, finding comfort in the toy since being separated from his family.

So, the Ichikawa City Zoo put out a statement about all the attention Punch the gorilla is getting from the other monkeys. Basically, they’re asking everyone to cheer for Punch and his attempts to, you know, navigate the situation, instead of just feeling bad for him. It’s like, ‘root for the guy, don’t pity him!’

He does, however, appear to have a “bodyguard” now, too.
