What Fans Can Expect From X-Men: Outback #1
Marvel’s X-Men: Outback #1 revisits a period when Storm, Wolverine, Rogue, Colossus, Dazzler, Havok, Psylocke, and Longshot were presumed dead. Secretly, they continued to protect the world from a hidden base in the Australian Outback. This issue explores why they chose this remote location, the internal conflicts that nearly broke the team, and the threat of their past enemies revealing their survival.
The X-Men first traveled to Australia in 1987. After the events there concluded the following year, many mutant heroes were presumed dead. Those who survived joined their teammates in relocating to Australia, hoping to find a peaceful place to live.
Although many longtime fans look back fondly on the X-Men’s time spent in the Australian Outback, this period also saw the introduction of some of their most terrifying foes and difficult stories. The Reavers were among the worst of these new threats, and they played a significant role in…
X-Men: Outback writer Steve Orlando recently shared how much the series means to him personally. He explained that it’s unusual for a creator to get the opportunity to work on a comic set in the era that first inspired their love for it. Orlando fondly remembers discovering the X-Men through issues he collected from flea markets and comic book racks in the late 80s and 90s, and that ‘Outback’ was his first experience with the team in print.
Orlando expressed immense enthusiasm, describing how captivating the era was. “They were absolutely electric! The drama, the fight for a fresh start, the larger-than-life characters…and everything new about it!” he said. “It was a truly daring time, and it made me a lifelong fan. The chance to work on X-MEN: OUTBACK set in that period? It’s beyond what I ever dreamed of as a kid.”
According to writer Orlando, the upcoming X-Men: Outback series will feature a fantastic creative team with Stephen Segovia and Russell Dauterman. They’re planning stories that honor and build upon the classic era, bringing back beloved characters while also introducing fresh dangers, surprising relationships, and some previously unknown romantic histories.
X-Men: Outback #1 from Marvel Comics goes on sale starting on June 24.
