Netflix’s thriller series, The Night Agent, has become a huge hit since it premiered in 2023. Created by Shawn Ryan, the show is full of action and has quickly gained a dedicated following. With 30 episodes already released, viewers are excited and looking forward to season 4, hoping to see what happens next with the show’s resilient main character.
Gabriel Basso stars in The Night Agent as Peter Sutherland, an FBI agent who finds himself caught up in dangerous political conspiracies and mysteries every season. Although the show features the usual moral challenges and risks found in similar action series, The Night Agent has something special that could keep it going for many seasons to come.
The Night Agent’s Seasons Are Self-Contained
Each Entry Is A New Standalone Adventure
Most Netflix shows tell one continuous story, but The Night Agent is different – each season features a brand new case. The first season, based on the novel by Matthew Quirk, centers on Peter Sutherland’s efforts to keep Rose Larkin safe from multiple assassination attempts. Once that mystery is solved, Peter tackles even more complex and dangerous situations.
As a viewer, I’ve been hooked by The Night Agent from the start. Each season – whether it’s the Foxglove plot in season two or the White House turmoil in season three – throws a fresh, major villain and a sprawling government conspiracy our way. While familiar faces and ideas do return, keeping things grounded, it’s really Agent Sutherland who’s the glue holding the whole series together. He’s essential to making each new adventure work.
Peter Sutherland Can Always Be Sent On A New Mission
The Flexibility Leaves Ample Room For Creativity
A strong main character is often all a series needs to stay popular, much like the enduring appeal of James Bond or Agatha Christie books. Peter Sutherland, as a key part of the successful Night Action program, is capable of being sent on missions anywhere in the world. Just as the second season unexpectedly took him to Thailand, the fourth season could easily be set in a completely different location, like Australia, Uruguay, or even the North Pole.
The show could easily add new enemies, dangers to national security, or large-scale disasters for Agent Sutherland to face in future seasons. And, if characters survive the season’s climax, popular favorites like Rose (from season 2) or Chelsea Arrington could return. Because the story focuses on a single agent, The Night Agent has a lot of flexibility when it comes to creating new adventures.

While The Night Agent began as an adaptation of a book, the Netflix series has actually surpassed its source material with its new, original storylines. The positive reviews for season 3 demonstrate that taking creative chances can pay off, particularly in a genre like action thrillers that sometimes feels stale.
| Critical Response to The Night Agent | |
|---|---|
| Season | Rotten Tomatoes Score |
| Season 1 | 75% |
| Season 2 | 86% |
| Season 3 | 82% |
As a movie and TV buff, I really appreciate how The Night Agent doesn’t try to be something it’s not. It’s just pure, reliable entertainment – the perfect show to lose yourself in when you want a good binge. And honestly, the huge fanbase proves it – people would probably keep watching forever if they could! It’s not about groundbreaking storytelling, it’s just consistently fun.
