Reboots and revivals are popular in the movie and TV industry, and this show is no exception. However, the revival seems to be doing well, launching with a strong Rotten Tomatoes score comparable to the original series.
Scrubs is a funny medical show that originally ran from 2001 to 2010, following the lives of young doctors at Sacred Heart Hospital, especially a character named J.D. Even though it was a comedy, the show was known for being surprisingly realistic. Now, 16 years after it ended, Scrubs is back with a revival, and critics seem to love it – it currently has an 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The new Scrubs revival starts with two episodes on February 25th, so its audience score will probably change as more people share their thoughts. Currently, it has an 88% rating based on 17 reviews, which is similar to how the original series was received.
The medical show is well-received, earning an 83% approval rating from critics and 86% from viewers. However, another show associated with it has significantly lower scores, with a ‘rotten’ 53% from critics and just 35% audience approval.
What Are Critics Saying About the Scrubs Revival?
Brian Tallerico at RogerEbert.com pointed out that the actors clearly enjoyed being back together, not just for the work, but because they genuinely loved the characters they played.
In a positive review, Collider’s Greer Riddell highlighted the show’s comfortable and friendly dynamic between the cast as a key strength. She noted that this allows new characters to fit in seamlessly, and praised creator Bill Lawrence for sticking to what works, rather than trying to drastically change the formula in Season 10.
As a big fan of Scrubs, I was really hoping the revival would recapture the magic, but honestly, I have to agree with Variety’s Alison Herman – it didn’t quite work. She called it ‘Millennial cringe,’ and that feels right. When you remember the original, it’s still a comforting show, but watching the new episodes now, it just feels…dated. The humor hasn’t aged as well as I’d hoped.
What Is Scrubs About?
The new series brings the original cast back together after a long hiatus, and for the first time, features JD and Turk working side-by-side again. As they’ve gotten older and the world of medicine has evolved, the series also offers a fresh perspective through the eyes of Perry Cox.
As a huge Scrubs fan, I’m thrilled to hear that the revival is bringing back so many of the original cast! Zach Braff will be reprising his role as J.D., alongside Donald Faison as Turk and Sarah Chalke as Elliot. And it’s amazing news that John C. McGinley and Judy Reyes are returning as Dr. Cox and Carla, even as guest stars. Plus, Christa Miller is back as Jordan – honestly, it feels like coming home!
The upcoming revival of Scrubs will feature both beloved characters from the original series and several new additions to the cast. These new faces include Rachel Bilson, known from Nashville and The O.C., as well as Andy Ridings (Shifting Gears, All My Children) and Lisa Gilroy (Shrinking, Twisted Metal). Joining them are Vanessa Bayer (Saturday Night Live), Joel Kim Booster (Fire Island), Ava Bunn (Head Shot), Jacob Dudman (The Stranger), David Gridley (It Takes Three), Layla Mohammadi (Lioness), and Amanda Morrow (The Devil Wears Prada 2).
Scrubs Season 10 premieres on ABC on Feb. 25, with a release on Hulu the next day.
