Although reports surfaced that the planned movie focusing on Kylo Ren/Ben Solo – titled The Hunt for Ben Solo – was cancelled, there’s still a chance it could happen. Adam Driver recently shared that he and director Steven Soderbergh presented the idea for a film set after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker to Disney and Lucasfilm, but Disney CEO Bob Iger decided against moving forward with the project.
For years, the filmmakers Driver and Soderbergh had been working on a project, and when they announced their new film, it effectively meant The Hunt for Ben Solo wasn’t going to happen. Despite a petition from Star Wars fans hoping to see it made, the decision stood. While Kathleen Kennedy leaving Lucasfilm briefly sparked some optimism, the project still seemed unlikely. But now, there’s renewed hope for the film.

Back in 2021, Adam Driver and Steven Soderbergh proposed a project called The Hunt for Ben Solo, and Lucasfilm presidents Kathleen Kennedy and Dave Filoni were both supportive. Ultimately, Disney CEO Bob Iger rejected the idea because he couldn’t figure out how Ben Solo could have survived his death in The Rise of Skywalker, despite the initial enthusiasm from two of Lucasfilm’s top leaders.
Okay, so big news for Star Wars fans! Kathleen Kennedy is leaving her role as president of Lucasfilm, and honestly, I think this is a really interesting shift. Dave Filoni, who’s been a huge part of the recent Star Wars success with shows like The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, is now stepping up as the main creative lead. What that basically means is he’ll have a lot more direct influence – he’ll be talking directly to people like Bob Iger! Before, he was a creative officer, but he had to go through Kennedy to get things approved. Now, he’s got a much more powerful position and will be shaping the future of Star Wars directly.

Because Dave Filoni previously supported The Hunt for Ben Solo and now has more influence at Lucasfilm, there’s a good chance the movie could still happen. Filoni is well-liked by both fans and the studio, having created popular Star Wars series like The Clone Wars and Ahsoka. This shift in leadership at Lucasfilm might mean they’ll reconsider The Hunt for Ben Solo.
How The Hunt For Ben Solo Could Still Happen
As a huge Star Wars fan, I’m really encouraged by Dave Filoni getting more responsibility at Lucasfilm. While Disney still has the ultimate control over what movies get made, I think Filoni could champion projects like The Hunt for Ben Solo more effectively than Kathleen Kennedy did. It feels like his creative vision might be different, and he might be more willing to really push for stories he believes in – like The Hunt for Ben Solo – with Bob Iger and the rest of Disney.
The recent leadership change at Lucasfilm opens the door for fresh ideas and bolder choices in the future of Star Wars. Dave Filoni now has a direct line to Bob Iger, giving him the opportunity to champion projects he’s enthusiastic about – perhaps even revisiting ideas like The Hunt for Ben Solo that weren’t previously pursued.
Star Wars’ Future Movies Make The Hunt For Ben Solo More Difficult
While there’s renewed hope for a film exploring Ben Solo’s story, Lucasfilm and Disney already have many Star Wars projects planned. Specifically, a movie focusing on Rey Skywalker and a new Jedi Order is set to continue the story after The Rise of Skywalker. Additionally, Simon Kinberg is developing a trilogy, potentially starting with an “Episode X,” also taking place after the sequel trilogy.
With the Star Wars story continuing after The Rise of Skywalker, there’s less and less chance of incorporating the story The Hunt for Ben Solo. Plans for the future, including the New Jedi Order and a trilogy previously proposed by Kinberg, are likely already set following the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Disney previously rejected The Rise of Kylo Ren, making it challenging to now include a story about bringing Ben Solo back to life.
Although we don’t know any specifics about a potential story called The Hunt for Ben Solo, if Ben Solo survived the events of The Rise of Skywalker, it would significantly impact the future of the Star Wars galaxy. It wouldn’t make sense for him to be excluded from a New Jedi Order, nor would it explain why Rey would leave him behind. If Ben Solo is going to be featured in a movie of his own, it needs to happen before Rey’s story progresses any further in the Star Wars timeline.
