Work on the Spider-Man: Brand New Day project is continuing, and a recent report suggests Marvel made a trade-off to achieve their vision for the story.
It wasn’t always a given that Spider-Man would be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Before the Avengers came together, a different Spider-Man, played by Andrew Garfield, was battling villains like the Lizard and Electro in separate movies. But in 2015, Marvel and Sony made a deal that finally allowed Spider-Man to join the larger MCU storyline.
Things haven’t always been smooth sailing since then. In 2019, the studios even announced they were splitting up, but a conversation between Holland and the CEOs of Disney and Sony – Bob Iger and Tom Rothman – helped them resolve their differences and continue working together.
The upcoming Spider-Man movie, Brand New Day, promises to be a different kind of experience for fans. It’s the gritty, down-to-earth adventure many have been waiting for, and will introduce Jon Bernthal as the Punisher on the big screen while also bringing back Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk. But has this new direction come with some drawbacks?
Marvel ‘gave something’ to Sony for Spider-Man: Brand New Day

According to a recent question and answer session about the Cosmic Circus, Sony asked for a favor from Marvel in return for allowing them to move forward with the ‘Brand New Day’ storyline. When asked what that favor was, insider Alex Perez simply responded with a black heart emoji.
What does this development signify? Perhaps Sony is planning a standalone Black Cat movie or series, or could it connect the story of ‘Beyond the Spider-Verse’ to what’s happening in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
Here’s what Alex Perez is reporting about the upcoming Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse movie:
– Yelena Belova’s appearance will be a brief cameo, similar to Matt Murdock’s in No Way Home.
– The symbiote’s backstory from the Spider-Man Universe (SSU) won’t be used, even though it’s still considered part of the official story.
– Marvel Studios made some compromises to keep the movie grounded and focused on street-level action.
– Tom Holland has accidentally revealed the main villain.— Hernandy D. Morales (@hernandy_s) September 23, 2025
I’ve been thinking about the symbiote left in *Venom: The Last Dance*, and it’s a really interesting idea. What if Marvel Studios just ignores it, but Sony gets to build stories around it that *still* happen within the MCU? It would be a clever way to keep those characters connected without Marvel having to deal with them directly, wouldn’t it?
Whether it will actually happen is still unknown, but the report hinted at some interesting possibilities. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is eventually planned to battle Norman Osborn from the main Marvel universe (not the version played by Willem Dafoe), and Holland may have accidentally revealed who the movie’s main villain is.
Perez described the new version as simpler, tougher, and more aggressive. He hinted they were talking about the Hulk, who is reportedly much more frightening than before, potentially even capable of causing someone’s death.
Regarding the next Spider-Verse movie, Perez shared a mysterious hint, quoting the song ‘The Proclaimers’: “And I would walk five hundred miles. And I would walk five hundred more. Just to be the man who walked a thousand miles to fall down at your door.”
Before “Brand New Day” comes out on July 31st, here’s what you need to know: we’ll explore possible roles for Tramell Tillman, what Florence Pugh’s Yelena will be up to, and the newest buzz surrounding Sadie Sink’s character.
