While Taylor Sheridan has created several successful shows, primarily on Paramount+, many consider season 4 of Mayor of Kingstown to be his best work yet.
The fourth season of Mayor of Kingstown is a huge success, and while Hugh Dillon and Dave Erickson deserve a lot of credit, it’s clear that Taylor Sheridan’s initial idea for the show has really resonated with audiences, making this one of its best seasons yet.
Mayor Of Kingstown Season 4 Is Sheridan’s TV Masterpiece
Though 1923 and Landman are both strong contenders, many believe season 4 of Mayor of Kingstown is Taylor Sheridan’s best television work to date. What really stands out is how the show completely transformed itself after the dramatic ending of season 3, which left the series’ future in question and raised the stakes higher than ever before.
If you haven’t seen Mayor of Kingstown yet, you’re in for a treat. This crime thriller, with four completed seasons totaling 40 episodes, is one of the best hidden gems on streaming. A shorter, final season of eight episodes is coming soon. Jeremy Renner delivers a powerful performance as Mike McLusky, a problem-solver in a Michigan prison town inspired by co-creator Dillon’s own upbringing.
Season 4 of Mayor of Kingstown received perfect reviews from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, earning a 100% score, and also resonated with audiences, garnering an 87% approval rating. The show has consistently improved with each season, becoming increasingly focused and establishing itself as a powerfully realistic and distinctive prison drama. While the series overall holds a 65% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the latest season reached a new peak in quality.
Mayor Of Kingstown Should Continue After Five Seasons

Season four of Mayor of Kingstown was exceptionally strong, leaving many viewers wanting more. Despite being the least-watched of the three Taylor Sheridan shows released in Fall 2025—along with seasons three of Tulsa King and two of Landman—Mayor of Kingstown received the best reviews from critics.
Despite some doubts about its future, Paramount has confirmed Mayor of Kingstown will return for a fifth and final season. However, this season will be shorter than previous ones, with only eight episodes instead of the usual ten. This decision is probably due to the cost of making the show, although it did receive fewer viewers than other new shows from Taylor Sheridan in the last three months of 2025.
Season 4 of Mayor of Kingstown was a surprisingly strong showing that didn’t quite reach the audience it deserved. While a fifth and final season should give the show the recognition it’s earned, it’s disappointing to see it end, especially after such a creative and compelling fourth season. Many believe Mayor of Kingstown represents some of Taylor Sheridan’s best work and could have continued to be a standout series for years to come.
