Ubisoft studio evacuates 800 employees after bomb threat

On Thursday, Ubisoft’s studio in Montpellier, France was evacuated after a bomb threat triggered a large response from police and bomb disposal teams. Almost 800 people were cleared from the building.

On February 19th, authorities received a threatening email warning of a bomb inside the company building in Castelnau-le-Lez, according to the French newspaper Midi Libre. Without delay, officials evacuated around 500 employees and secured the area.

Bomb threat prompts large security operation at Ubisoft Montpellier

I couldn’t believe it when I heard the news! Apparently, about thirty police officers, including a special intervention unit, swarmed the studio on Didier-Daurat street. They quickly set up a whole security perimeter and blocked off the surrounding streets while teams started searching the place. It was a pretty intense scene, honestly.

Firefighters from the Hérault region assisted with the response, and experts used a bomb-sniffing dog to carefully search the building, checking each room. As a safety measure, surrounding businesses also evacuated, bringing the total number of people gathered outside the security perimeter to almost 800.

According to a source familiar with the investigation, authorities aren’t focusing on any single suspect right now. Their priority is making sure the public is safe.

Officials haven’t yet said if the threat was real, and they’re still considering the possibility it was a false alarm. Teams continued searching the studio and nearby areas to make sure everything was safe before letting people return.

I was really shaken to hear about the latest security incident at Ubisoft, and it reminded me of something else that happened a while back. Back in November 2020, things got pretty scary at the Montreal office – people actually had to run up to the roof because they thought there might be a hostage situation! Thankfully, it turned out to be a false alarm, and everyone was evacuated safely. It’s just unsettling to hear about these things happening at their offices again.
