As a huge DC fan, I just heard some interesting news about the upcoming Supergirl movie! James Gunn is bringing Kara Zor-El to the big screen, which is exciting, but it won’t be the same Supergirl we’ve been watching on The CW. Melissa Benoist, who played the role for years, won’t be reprising her part. Instead, Milly Alcock, who I really enjoyed in House of the Dragon, will be taking on the mantle of Supergirl in this new, interconnected DC Universe. It’s a bit bittersweet, but I’m definitely curious to see what Gunn has in store for the character!
This new version of Supergirl feels quite different from the one on The CW. When the movie begins, she’s still figuring out who she is and isn’t afraid to break the rules. That’s just one of the major ways this Supergirl will be different from the previous series in the Arrowverse.
The first trailer for the upcoming Supergirl movie revealed that the 2026 film won’t include any references to CatCo, a key element from the Supergirl TV show on The CW.

The upcoming Supergirl movie (2026) will be a grand, science fiction story, quite different from the recent TV series. The film will focus on Kara’s adventures in space as she assists a young alien named Ruthye in avenging her father’s death.

As a big fan of Supergirl, I always loved seeing Kara at CatCo, her workplace! It was so cool watching her grow her career there over the six seasons of the show. Cat Grant built it up from the ground, and it really felt like a central part of the Arrowverse. It’s a little disappointing to hear that CatCo won’t be appearing in the new Supergirl movie, though. I’ll definitely miss seeing that familiar setting!

Unlike other versions, The CW’s Supergirl didn’t focus on outer space or fantastical adventures. Instead, it presented a more realistic story, placing the character in a very down-to-earth setting.
Okay, so DC Studios is giving us Supergirl on June 26th, and I’m already intrigued. It’s the second film in James Gunn’s revamped DC Universe, picking up threads from the upcoming Superman movie. Craig Gillespie, who did a fantastic job with I, Tonya, is directing, and this isn’t your typical superhero story. It seems Supergirl is on a pretty dark path – a revenge quest, no less – after she meets a young alien girl who’s searching for her father’s killer. Sounds like a potentially messy, and compelling, ride.
Will Supergirl Ever Come Back Down to Earth?
When Supergirl officially joins the DC Universe on the big screen, she’ll be a hero who travels the cosmos. While fans have briefly seen her on Earth in Superman and Peacemaker Season 2, her first major movie will focus on adventures beyond our planet.
So, with Superman giving us a first look at the new DC Universe, Supergirl is going to be all about establishing how they envision space and the wider cosmos within that universe. But don’t think that means Milly Alcock’s Supergirl will be rocketing around in space all the time, it just means the show will build out that part of the DCU.
It’s likely she’ll eventually become more like the Melissa Benoist’s well-known version of the character. However, it’s still uncertain if her workplace, CatCo, will reappear in the story.
CatCo was first developed for the CW’s Supergirl show. Because of this, it’s unlikely to play a significant role in the future.
I’ve always known Supergirl, like Superman, has a history of being portrayed in different media. So, honestly, if Alcock’s Supergirl ends up as a journalist within the new DC Universe, it wouldn’t shock me at all. It actually feels pretty natural, given her background!
