Despite some criticisms, the Star Wars sequel trilogy (2015-2019) featured several popular characters, and Ben Solo, also known as Kylo Ren, stood out as a fan favorite. The complex character—son of Han Solo and Leia Organa—captivated audiences with his transformation from villain to hero. There was even talk of a solo movie focusing on Ben Solo, which excited many Star Wars fans, but unfortunately, those plans never materialized.
Initially planned with director and Rebecca Blunt, this film—believed to be called The Hunt for Ben Solo—would have shown how Ben Solo found redemption after the events of Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. Director Soderbergh recently explained to BK Mag that Disney unexpectedly cancelled the project before it could even begin, which he found frustrating.
The director explained his and Kathleen Kennedy’s frustration, noting he and Emily Blunt and Adam Driver had worked on the project for two and a half years without pay. Though understandably upset about that, he’s mostly saddened that the film—and his vision for resolving a major question about Ben Solo’s story—will never be seen.
It wasn’t surprising that she was frustrated – we all were. Adam, Rebecca Blunt, and I had put in two and a half years of work without pay. When Adam and I talked about going public with the situation, I urged him to simply state the facts, not offer opinions or guesses. The official explanation we received was that they didn’t believe Ben Solo could still be alive, and that was all we knew. There wasn’t much else to do but accept it and move forward. I had already envisioned the finished film in my mind and was disappointed that others wouldn’t get to see it. I expected the conversation to focus on logistics – where to go next, and what it would cost. I had a solid plan, but we never even got to discuss it. It’s really frustrating, and we’re all very disappointed.
Will Adam Driver’s Ben Solo Movie Ever Happen?

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
Getting a movie made about Adam Driver’s character, Ben Solo, proved difficult, with Disney leaders Bob Iger and Alan Bergman strongly opposing the idea. Ultimately, they couldn’t find a way to convincingly bring the character back after his death at the end of The Rise of Skywalker.
Fans have never been thrilled with the way characters in Star Wars repeatedly die and then come back to life. The most famous instances include Emperor Palpatine’s return in Episode IX (famously explained as “Somehow, Palpatine returned.”) and Darth Maul, who was cut in half during the climax of Episode I – The Phantom Menace but reappeared in animated series.

Kylo Ren/Ben Solo is a standout character in the sequel trilogy, and with Star Wars currently having a seven-year gap between films, he’s a strong candidate for his own movie. Although The Mandalorian & Grogu and Starfighter are promising projects, Ben Solo already has a large and dedicated fanbase, which suggests a film centered on him would likely be a successful venture for Lucasfilm.
