Okay, so I was reading up on the new Harry Potter series coming to HBO, and Johnny Flynn, who’s playing Lucius Malfoy, let it slip that we’ll definitely see his character in season one. That’s interesting because, if you know the books, Lucius doesn’t really show up until later! It sounds like they’re already making some changes to the story, which, as a huge fan, is both exciting and a little nerve-wracking!
HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series is a huge undertaking, and one of the most ambitious fantasy TV projects ever. It plans to turn each book in J.K. Rowling’s series into a complete season of television. Developed by Francesca Gardiner and directed by Mark Mylod, the show aims to be a more accurate and in-depth adaptation of the books than the earlier movies.
Jason Isaacs, who played Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter films, recently discussed returning to the role. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Isaacs addressed the ongoing discussions about J.K. Rowling’s views on transgender issues and clarified that while he’s reprising the character, he doesn’t feel obligated to perfectly mirror Rowling’s perspectives. He also confirmed Lucius will be appearing in the first season of the new series, even though the character has a small role in the original Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. You can find his complete statement below.
There’s been a lot of discussion surrounding J.K. Rowling, which has been interesting to address – and it’s important to have those conversations. The team working on this project is fantastic, creating a truly special environment, especially with people like showrunner Francesca Gardiner and directors like Mark Mylod.
The attention to detail is amazing. I barely appear in the first book, and neither does Lucius, really – though I am part of the initial series. It’s interesting to film for a day, then have a break of a month or so, and return to find everyone has formed such close bonds. But the atmosphere is incredibly welcoming.
Lucius has always been an important character in the Harry Potter series, but he becomes more prominent starting with the second book, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. By introducing him early in the first season, the HBO series hints that it might tell a wider story, moving beyond just Harry’s perspective.
Most of the books focus on what Harry experiences, so we don’t see much of what the adult characters are up to. A TV series, though, would give creators the chance to show those other storylines, letting us explore the wizarding world much more fully than the movies did.
Adjusting the timeline could help establish the Malfoy family’s power sooner, hinting at future problems and giving viewers a clearer sense of the political landscape from the start. It could also create a more consistent storyline across seasons, particularly if the show plans to develop characters and their stories over a longer run.
HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series will star Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione, and Alastair Stout as Ron. John Lithgow will play Dumbledore, with Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, joining the cast alongside Flynn.
Because each season will cover one book, the show can delve into side characters and explore more of the story than the movies did. This doesn’t mean the adaptation will change the original story, but it does mean viewers will finally be able to see the book’s subtle details brought to life.
The first year of Harry’s story at Hogwarts will likely remain familiar, but the new TV series aims to create a more expansive and interconnected world from the beginning. These comments from producer Flynn provide a sneak peek at how the show will reimagine the classic story for television. Viewers will have to wait until 2027 to see if the HBO Harry Potter series successfully brings the magic to the screen.
