‘Scrubs’ Revival Trailer’s New Nurses Reveal Makes Perfect Sense

Like many TV revivals, the new Scrubs won’t simply bring back the original characters. It will acknowledge the 16 years that have passed by introducing a lot of new characters alongside the returning stars. While this approach initially raises concerns about repeating the mistakes of the short-lived Scrubs: Med School, the first trailer for the revival looks much better than the show’s controversial final season in 2010.

Honestly, a lot of us were wondering what happened to the Janitor, Neil Flynn’s character! But thinking about it, with so many new faces being introduced, it makes sense he’s not around as much. It seems like the new doctors will really take up a lot of screen time this season – nine episodes is a lot to fill! And it’s not just the doctors either; they’re also refreshing another group of characters that feels pretty similar, which is cool to see.

‘Scrubs’ Revival Trailer Finally Reveals More Nurses as Main Characters

Hospital nurses are just as vital as doctors, but the original run of Scrubs didn’t give them the attention they deserved. While Judy Reyes’ character, Carla Espinosa, represented nurses well for eight seasons, most other nursing characters were limited to supporting roles. Even Laverne, played by Aloma Wright, was often reduced to quick jokes and didn’t have many significant storylines. Many nurses appeared briefly and disappeared, often as extras used to make the hospital seem busier. Though some guest stars played nurses with important roles in the main characters’ stories, most were simply background actors.

The trailer for the new Scrubs revival suggests the show is intentionally addressing a past weakness: a lack of strong supporting characters. We see two new nurses chatting with familiar faces at Sacred Heart Hospital, and given the talent of the actors playing them, it would be a waste to give them small roles. X Mayo recently played Janelle in Wonder Man, and Michael James Scott is a well-known Broadway performer – in fact, BroadwayWorld reports he holds the record for the longest run as the Genie in Aladdin.

Why Adding New Nurses to the ‘Scrubs’ Revival Makes So Much Sense

ABC

This is a smart addition to the show for a couple of reasons. With Zach Braff returning to Sacred Heart after so many years, it’s natural that his character would encounter people he doesn’t know, like some of the nurses. While many of the original actors are returning, it wouldn’t feel authentic if the show didn’t also introduce new faces. The two new nurses we’ve seen in the trailer might just be the beginning, and we can expect to see even more new characters when the revival premieres.

The nurse’s station was a central gathering place in Scrubs. Doctors frequently stopped by to get patient charts, check lab results, and chat with each other between seeing patients. Many scenes with Carla and Laverne happened there, though other nurses were usually just in the background. The writers sometimes put doctors or other characters at the desk to add variety to the conversations. Adding more actual nurses to these scenes will make those classic Scrubs moments feel more realistic and natural.
