DC’s Canceled Zatanna Movie’s ‘Demented’ Plot Details Revealed

I just read that Emerald Fennell, who directed the new Wuthering Heights, was talking about a DC movie she was supposed to make that sadly got canceled. She said her take on it was going to be really dark and emotionally heavy, which honestly sounds amazing! It’s a shame we won’t get to see it.

Emerald Fennell on her canceled DC Zatanna movie

Emerald Fennell recently discussed her abandoned DC film about Zatanna. Speaking on the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast, she explained the story’s darker themes and the reasons it was ultimately canceled.

Fennell addressed her earlier description of the screenplay as “super demented,” explaining it reflected her personal feelings at the time. She admitted, “It was probably demented because I was going through a lot personally.” Fennell also mentioned she had just finished working on Promising Young Woman and was new to the world of superhero films.

Fennell aimed to create a more intimate project, characterizing the script as about a woman experiencing a mental breakdown. She later realized it might have strayed too far from typical genre expectations and confessed she hasn’t looked at it in years, describing it as “really dark.”

Honestly, it was tough going back to read the script. I just didn’t feel like I’d quite lived up to what everyone expected of me in the role. But I have so much affection for J.J. Abrams – he really gave me the chance, and I adore him for that.

The film originated when J.J. Abrams first joined Warner Bros. and the studio was exploring a darker corner of the Justice League universe. As she explained, the project began during a period of change and studio restructuring. She described it as typical for the film industry – plans often shift and evolve.
