Death Stranding Live-Action Movie Will Feature Characters Who Weren’t In The Games

Besides an animated Death Stranding movie, a live-action film is also being made, directed by Michael Sarnoski and produced by A24. Sarnoski and Hideo Kojima revealed more details about the project during a celebration of Kojima Productions’ 10th anniversary.

Hideo Kojima chose Michael Sarnoski to direct the film because he was impressed with Sarnoski’s work on movies like ‘Pig’ and ‘A Quiet Place: Day One,’ believing he was the ideal director for the project.

Sarnoski admitted he was initially scared to work on such a popular franchise, but after talking with Hideo Kojima and the team at A24, and realizing he’d have creative control, he decided to take the job.

Sarnoski wants to create a story that feels true to the game’s spirit and core ideas, but introduces fresh characters and a completely new narrative within that world.

The upcoming Death Stranding movie will present a fresh story with characters not previously featured in the games, according to Sarnoski. He explained that the film aims to be a relatable, human story that will appeal to both existing fans and newcomers alike.

Hideo Kojima, the creator of Death Stranding, has decided not to directly direct the upcoming movie adaptation. He explained that if he did, he’d likely become overly involved and start micromanaging. However, he is still working on the project as a producer and expressed his confidence in director Michael. “I trust Michael,” Kojima stated.

The Death Stranding movie is in the very early stages of development, and details like the cast and release date haven’t been announced yet. Norman Reedus, who plays the lead character Sam in the games, has expressed interest in reprising his role. In addition to the movie, an animated Death Stranding film is also being created, expanding the game’s universe.

The latest installment in the Death Stranding series, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, was released in June. Although Hideo Kojima has concepts for a third Death Stranding game, he doesn’t intend to direct its development. Currently, Kojima is also focused on creating the games OD and Physint.

A24 is making a movie based on Elden Ring, directed by Alex Garland, who has been nominated for an Oscar. The first trailer for the Death Stranding anime, currently called “Mosquito,” was revealed at the Beyond the Strand event and is available to watch above.
