After a seven-year break, the world of Star Wars is back in cinemas. But the promotion for The Mandalorian & Grogu‘s return isn’t generating the excitement many fans were hoping for.
The Super Bowl ad featuring The Mandalorian & Grogu has sparked a lot of debate, but the real issue isn’t the ad itself. Instead, the controversy stems from the overall marketing approach – or lack of a clear plan – for the show so far.
To Be Clear: I Liked The Mandalorian & Grogu’s Super Bowl TV Spot
I genuinely enjoyed the Super Bowl commercial for The Mandalorian and Grogu. It was a clever take on the classic Budweiser commercials, swapping the Clydesdale horses for tauntauns from The Empire Strikes Back pulling Din Djarin and Grogu on a hover-sled through the snow. The voiceover by Sam Elliot was a fantastic addition, and it really captured the Spaghetti Western feel the show is aiming for.
Look, the Super Bowl ad itself is well-made and effective. My issue, though, is the timing. Releasing it now, when we still haven’t seen a substantial trailer for The Mandalorian & Grogu, feels premature. With the show still over three months away, it just leaves me wanting more now and feels a bit frustrating as a viewer.
The brief preview released in September didn’t offer much in terms of scope or detail, so anticipation was understandably high for the The Mandalorian and Grogu Super Bowl spot.
Star Wars’ Super Bowl Spot Wouldn’t Be Controversial If Mandalorian & Grogu Already Had A Full Trailer Out
The Super Bowl ad probably wouldn’t have caused so much discussion if a complete trailer for The Mandalorian & Grogu had been available beforehand, or even shown later during the game.
It feels like Lucasfilm is relying heavily on existing Star Wars fans. While many people will likely see the movie, if it’s going to revitalize the franchise in theaters, it needs to attract a wider audience too. Simply having a cute character like Grogu isn’t enough to sustain interest after seven years.
Viewers need to understand the story’s background, the challenges the characters face, and why they should be invested in what happens. So far, this hasn’t been established, which is a problem especially since this series started as a streaming show and is now moving to movie theaters.
It’s important to clearly demonstrate why The Mandalorian & Grogu’s story needs a movie, rather than simply continuing as a fourth season of The Mandalorian.
As the movie’s release date nears, Star Wars needs to prove this story deserves a cinematic experience, not just that it relies on nostalgia. So far, they haven’t succeeded in making that case.
THIS Is The Way: 7 Years Later, Star Wars’ Big Return To Theaters Needs To Feel Much Bigger Than It Currently Does
It’s concerning that Lucasfilm isn’t creating much excitement, especially with the release date approaching. This new Star Wars film—the first since The Rise of Skywalker—should be a huge, must-see event, but the buzz just isn’t there.
To put things in perspective, the recent Masters of the Universe trailer quickly gained a lot more attention – 36 million views in just two weeks – compared to the The Mandalorian & Grogu trailer, which has only received 11 million views in four months. While it’s a tough comparison, it shows that the rollout and initial reaction to The Mandalorian & Grogu haven’t been as strong as hoped.
A big trailer for The Mandalorian & Grogu would have been perfect yesterday. Since the Super Bowl didn’t feature any major superhero trailers, this was a great opportunity for the show to generate buzz and excitement – the kind you’d expect at this stage. This makes it clearer than ever that Star Wars needs to prioritize The Mandalorian & Grogu, and quickly.
The Mandalorian & Grogu releases in theaters on May 22nd, 2026.
