DC Superhero Blue Beetle Still Has a Place in the DCU

Though not a mainstream name, the superhero Blue Beetle remains important to James Gunn and Peter Safran’s plans for the DC Universe. Actor Xolo Maridueña, who plays Jaime Reyes, first appeared as the character in a successful 2023 film. This was a landmark moment, making Maridueña the first Latino actor to lead a superhero movie, and it resonated strongly with the Latino community.

While discussing his new film, The Wrecking Crew, featuring Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista, Solo told The Wrap that he expects Blue Beetle to continue as it is, even though a sequel hasn’t been officially approved yet.

I don’t believe the discussion about Blue Beetle is over. I’ve spoken with Peter Safran and John Rickard, and they’ve been receptive. James Gunn has also repeatedly stated that Blue Beetle will be included in the DC Universe, and he’s a big fan of the character.

I’m a huge fan of Blue Beetle, and I really hope we get to see more of Jaime Reyes and his amazing family! I’ve heard talk about continuing their story through animation, which I think would be fantastic. It’s a medium I’ve always wanted to work with, and I believe it could really let the Reyes family’s adventures shine. Honestly, if DC and Warner Bros. are open to it, I’d be thrilled to be a part of continuing their story in any way possible. It would be a dream come true!

Following the release of Blue Beetle, DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation started working on an animated spin-off series. This adds to a growing list of animated projects for the DC Universe, which already includes Creature Commandos and Mister Miracle. Miguel Puga, known for his work on The Casagrandes, was set to be the showrunner, with Cristian Martinez (Ironheart) as a writer. Zev Foreman, Luis Soto, Rickard, and Gareth Dunnet Alcocer were all slated to be executive producers. Originally, the show was planned to premiere in 2026, but it’s now been delayed.

Xolo Maridueña is Game for an Animated Continuation

Warner Bros.

As expected, actor Xolo Maridueña, who will be in the upcoming film Practical Magic 2 this September, previously told Screen Rant he’d be open to continuing his role as Blue Beetle through animation. Now, fans can imagine the character’s vibrant blue colors coming to life in exciting new ways.

I’m a big fan of animation, and I really enjoy the process of developing a character and finding their voice. Having already worked on Blue Beetle, I feel confident with the role. I’m excited to see the animated version come to life and explore stories that wouldn’t be possible with live-action. I’m inspired by shows like Avatar: The Last Airbender, Young Justice, and the films of Studio Ghibli, and I think there’s a lot of creative energy being brought to this project. I’m eager to see how Blue Beetle fits into that world.

Now that Jaime’s story can be told in a more flexible format, which comic book villains would you most like to see him face? Some options include Doctor Alchemy, Chronos, Enigma, Carapax the Indestructible Man, Hybrid, Maxwell Lord, Overthrow, La Dama, Typhoon, Black Beetle, Doctor Polaris, and the ancient, warlike race known as The Reach.
