The movie that first showed audiences is now the most-watched film on HBO Max. Starring Zendaya, a hugely popular actress around the globe, it’s no surprise the film is at the top of HBO’s charts. The movie earned $880 million worldwide and continues to be a hit with streamers.
Spider-Man: Homecoming was the first Spider-Man movie set within the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was made jointly by Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios, after Spider-Man was first introduced in Captain America: Civil War. Zendaya stars as MJ, whose full name is Michelle Jones Watson – this is the MCU’s take on the classic character Mary Jane Watson.
Surprisingly, Spider-Man: Homecoming is currently the most popular movie on HBO Max in countries all over the world, including the Bahamas, Brazil, Mexico, and Venezuela. It’s number one everywhere except Argentina, where it comes in at a close second.
It’s surprising to see Spider-Man: Homecoming trending on HBO Max because Sony films usually go to Netflix, and Disney films are typically found on Disney+ or Hulu. Sony has a deal to stream its movies on Netflix, and Disney owns the Disney+ and Hulu platforms. Despite this, Spider-Man: Homecoming has become a hit on HBO Max globally.
Zendaya Is the Breakout Star of Spider-Man: Homecoming
While Tom Holland leads Spider-Man: Homecoming, Zendaya might actually be the more globally recognized star. Anything Zendaya appears in quickly becomes highly anticipated, and she’s successfully brought that level of attention to all her work.
Zendaya gained significant attention through her roles in the Dune films and starred in the romantic drama Challengers with Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist. Hollywood acknowledges her as a top-tier actress who consistently draws moviegoers.
Zendaya appears in a major role throughout the three Spider-Man movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home. When it was announced she would play Mary Jane, some fans were initially upset, but she quickly won them over with her portrayal of the character.
When Spider-Man: Brand New Day was announced, fans immediately began asking if Zendaya would reprise her role. Marvel quickly confirmed she would be returning, which was a good move. Now, it’ll be interesting to see if her character, MJ, figures out that Peter Parker is Spider-Man again.
Why Spider-Man: Homecoming’s HBO Max Dominance Is a Big Deal
As a movie buff, I have to say, the fact that Spider-Man: Homecoming is the most-watched film on HBO Max right now is huge. It’s interesting because HBO Max, owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, is the home of DC – they released Superman not long ago and all the previous DC movies. Marvel and DC have always been rivals, but seeing a Marvel hero like Spider-Man topping the charts on DC’s streaming service feels like a bit of a power shift, doesn’t it?
Imagine if a Batman or Flash movie suddenly appeared on Disney+ and became more popular than Avengers movies like Infinity War or Endgame. That’s how surprising this is. Spider-Man is definitely one of Marvel’s biggest heroes, which makes it even more unexpected – it’s like seeing a Batman film on Disney+!
Spider-Man: Homecoming is now streaming internationally on HBO Max, and on Disney+ in the U.S.
