The new Masters of the Universe movie will see the return of Skeletor, who is set to terrorize Eternia once again. The director wants to make Skeletor a truly compelling villain for modern audiences. The story begins with Skeletor already in control of Eternia when He-Man, known as Adam, returns after being away for 15 years. Director Travis Knight has shared his vision for what Skeletor embodies in this new take on the He-Man story.
Jared Leto’s portrayal of Skeletor was compelling, according to Knight. He described the character as visually striking, frightening, humorous, and surprisingly vulnerable, highlighting his unique voice as a key part of the performance.
Knight explained that he was looking for a fresh take on the character, and Jared came to them with a strong passion for Skeletor and a personal connection to the character. Jared was eager to create something truly ambitious, and they ultimately developed a version that Knight is very pleased with, describing Skeletor as a prime example of harmful masculine traits.
As a huge fan of the original Masters of the Universe, I was really relieved to hear that the new movie’s director, Knight, was determined to keep Skeletor looking like… well, Skeletor! Apparently, some previous attempts at a reboot wanted to change his skull face to a golden mask, but Knight put a stop to that immediately. He’s said he flat-out refused, declaring that Skeletor has to have a skull face – a living, talking, expressive skull, and that’s non-negotiable. Honestly, good for him! It’s a key part of the character.
