HBO is planning a new TV series based on the popular video game Baldur’s Gate, and it will likely replace their hit show, created by Mazin. Mazin is also co-creator of one of HBO and HBO Max’s biggest successes, and this announcement follows comments from HBO boss Casey Bloys suggesting that show will conclude after its next season.
The Baldur’s Gate video game series, based on the popular Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game, is getting a new television adaptation. Interest in Dungeons & Dragons has surged recently, partly due to its prominent use in the Netflix hit Stranger Things. According to Deadline, Neil Mazin will lead the project as creator, writer, showrunner, and executive producer. Unlike The Last of Us, which adapted its source material directly, this series will continue the story of Baldur’s Gate beyond what’s already been established in the games.
The first season of The Last of Us closely followed the plot of the original video game, with a few added details and expanded scenes. Seasons two and three will primarily adapt The Last of Us Part II. Although there was talk of a fourth season to finish the story, that now seems unlikely as Craig Mazin is reportedly developing a new series for HBO.
The story of Baldur’s Gate will continue after the events of Baldur’s Gate 3, showing how both returning and new characters cope with the aftermath of the 2023 game. Baldur’s Gate 3 was a huge hit, following a group of adventurers trying to remove mind-controlling parasites, and now is a perfect time for a television adaptation. With Stranger Things finished on Netflix, there’s an opportunity to fill the void in fantasy shows based on Dungeons & Dragons.
‘The Last of Us’ Now Seems Certain to End With Season 3

HBO
From the beginning, HBO envisioned The Last of Us as a limited series, initially planning for three seasons. This was later adjusted to potentially cover the story of the second game over more than two seasons. While the development of a third game sparked hope for a longer series, its release isn’t anticipated until 2027 or 2028, leaving the show’s future uncertain.

With Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann already moving on from The Last of Us to work on new projects, Craig Mazin’s focus on Baldur’s Gate likely means there won’t be any more seasons of The Last of Us after season three, unless the show undergoes a major creative change – which rarely goes smoothly. We won’t see season three of The Last of Us on HBO for about a year, and by then, Mazin will likely be further along with Baldur’s Gate, giving us a better idea of the future for both shows.
