Markiplier’s film, Iron Lung, has been a huge success in theaters, and it’s poised to achieve something special this weekend.
Despite being made with limited funds and directed by first-time filmmaker Markiplier (a popular YouTuber), the movie Iron Lung – based on his video game of the same name – has become a surprising success, quickly earning back its production costs many times over.
The new horror film Iron Lung debuted at Number 2 in the US box office last week, just behind Send Help. While Send Help benefited from a large marketing budget from a major studio, Iron Lung succeeded thanks to a successful, independent marketing effort.
The Super Bowl is impacting movie theaters this weekend, and that could mean even bigger success for the low-budget horror film, Iron Lung…
Markiplier’s Iron Lung could claim box office top spot

More than 120 million people in the US typically watch the Super Bowl on Sunday, which means movie studios often release less important films that weekend. They save their biggest and best movies for times when they won’t compete with the game for viewers.
Deadline reports that the box office during Super Bowl weekend in 2025 was the second-weakest of the year, following 2024 which had the lowest-grossing Friday-to-Sunday period.
With few new movies being released in theaters, Iron Lung is likely to be the number one film, unless Send Help proves to be more popular.
Initial predictions show Sam Raimi’s “Send Help” is expected to outperform Markiplier’s “Iron Lung” at the box office, with estimated earnings of $8.6 million compared to $7.2 million.
I’m seriously blown away by how dedicated this YouTuber’s fans are! They really showed up last week, and a ton of them are going to see the movie again and again in theaters. Plus, they’re doing everything they can to get the word out – sharing it all over social media and leaving awesome reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s amazing to see!
More horror competition this weekend

This weekend, two new horror movies are hitting theaters and will be going up against the two horror films already playing.
The latest installment of ‘The Strangers,’ Chapter 3, is debuting in 2,500 theaters. However, despite the previous two films earning about $70 million globally, this new movie is only predicted to make around $5 million this weekend.
The new horror movie, Whistle, has a clever premise similar to the ‘Final Destination’ films. Although critics generally liked it, it’s opening in a limited number of theaters – only about 1,200 – and is expected to earn a very small amount of money during its opening weekend, likely less than ten million dollars.
Iron Lung and Send Help are facing tough competition from Stray Kids: The dominATE Experience. This K-Pop concert film is debuting in over 1,600 theaters, and ticket pre-sales suggest it could be a close race this weekend between music and horror movies.
