Fourteen years ago, the hilarious action-comedy 21 Jump Street, starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, hit theaters. It’s surprising that a potential comedy trilogy that could have defined the 2010s never materialized.
The 2012 comedy, directed by Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, was a huge success with both audiences and critics. Its sequel did even better financially and received similar praise, leading many to expect a third film, but one was never made.
21 Jump Street & Its Sequel Were Peak 2010s Comedy Movies
The 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street movies were the funniest and most successful comedy sequels of the 2010s. Although the Pitch Perfect films were also very popular, the Jump Street movies stand out because the sequel was both critically acclaimed and more financially successful than the first film – a rare accomplishment.
Both 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street were critical and commercial successes. 21 Jump Street received an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and earned around $201 million at the box office. Its sequel, 22 Jump Street, scored 84% on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed over $331 million worldwide (according to Box Office Mojo). This is particularly impressive, as many comedy films don’t manage to build a successful franchise beyond the first movie.
As a big fan of the Jump Street movies, I’ve always wondered why 23 Jump Street never happened. Apparently, there was a plan for it – a crossover with the new Men in Black films! Sony was really pushing for it in the late 2010s, but it ended up becoming Men in Black: International, which… didn’t exactly wow critics. Plus, from what The Hollywood Reporter said, Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill weren’t super keen on continuing the Jump Street series either, which probably didn’t help.
23 Jump Street Could Have Made The Perfect Comedy Trilogy
You can currently stream both 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street on Prime Video, and they’re still really funny! The movies have a fun, nostalgic vibe from the early 2010s and are packed with laughs. While Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill had great chemistry and were hilarious together, it’s understandable they wanted to move on to new projects after making the second film in 2014.
Leonardo DiCaprio received his first Oscar nomination for The Wolf of Wall Street between the Jump Street films, and Channing Tatum also began taking on more dramatic roles, like in the 2014 sports drama Foxcatcher and the 2016 Coen Brothers film Hail, Caesar!. Despite this, a third Jump Street movie released in 2016 would probably have been very successful financially, even if critics hadn’t loved it.
It’s been twelve years since Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill starred in the Jump Street films. Since then, Tatum has continued to appear in popular movies like Roofman and Blink Twice, while Hill has become a successful director, known for films such as Mid90s and Stutz, with more projects, Outcome and Cut Off, on the way. Thinking about it now, 23 Jump Street seems like the biggest comedy of the 2010s that never quite came to be, though a sequel could still be successful today.
