As a huge TV fan, I’ve noticed it’s getting harder and harder to find shows that really stick around these days. But I honestly think Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building has the potential to be one of the exceptions. What I especially love is the cast – Steve Martin and Martin Short, who have amazing chemistry together, paired with the fantastic Selena Gomez. It’s a really unique and funny combination!
The show centers around three neighbors – Charles, Oliver, and Mabel – who live in a historic Upper West Side building called the Arconia. They’re an unlikely trio, but they all share a passion for true crime podcasts. When a murder happens right in their building, they decide to team up, launch their own podcast, and try to solve the mystery themselves.
Since its debut in 2021, Only Murders in the Building has captivated audiences with its unique murder mysteries, and the popular Hulu series shows no signs of ending anytime soon. It’s been renewed for a sixth season, and many believe it could continue for quite a few more seasons beyond that.
Only Murders In The Building Could Easily Have Dozens Of Seasons
During the first season of Only Murders in the Building, the three main characters decided their podcast would only focus on murders happening inside their apartment building, the Arconia. This seemed like a very specific rule that might limit the show to just one season. However, Only Murders in the Building has continued for five seasons and counting, with the Arconia proving to be a surprisingly dangerous place to live.
One of the enjoyable parts of the show is how creatively and unexpectedly people keep dying. In season 3 of Only Murders in the Building, Ben Glenroy initially seemed to die on stage during a Broadway performance, which would have normally been outside the scope of the podcast’s investigations. But when he turned out to be alive, only to then fall to his death in the Arconia’s elevator, he became a case they could investigate.
The season 5 finale of Only Murders in the Building created a lot of suspense by having the newest victim collapse right in front of the Arconia building. Everyone—both those watching on screen and those nearby—held their breath to see if the victim would fully cross the building’s property line, which would officially make them the focus of season 6.
Okay, let me tell you, this show is killing it – and it knows it! “Only Murders in the Building” just made a really confident, funny statement that it’s planning to stick around for a while. I recently read an interview with co-creator John Hoffman where he basically said they’re happy to keep going for as long as the network will let them. And honestly? Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez all seem genuinely excited to return. That’s fantastic news for fans – it sounds like “Only Murders” is set for a really long and successful run, and I, for one, am thrilled!
How Only Murders In The Building Keeps Reinventing Itself
The show Only Murders in the Building faced a challenge: because it’s set in one location, it could easily become repetitive. But surprisingly, each season feels fresh and the show on Hulu keeps finding new directions.
The first season drew viewers in with its charming mystery format. Season two built on this success by raising the tension and turning the main characters into suspects in the case they were solving. Season three shifted the focus away from the Arconia building and centered on Oliver’s work on a Broadway show. Finally, season four took the trio to Hollywood, moving the story away from New York City entirely.
The fifth season of Only Murders in the Building brought Charles, Oliver, and Mabel back to the Arconia, but a lot had changed. The building now featured robots instead of doormen, and wealthy investors were interested in buying it. To keep the show lighthearted, the season’s murder mystery was connected to the Mafia, preserving the show’s classic New York atmosphere.
As a huge fan of Only Murders in the Building, I was so excited to hear that season 6 is going to be filmed entirely in London! I love how the show keeps things fresh by switching up the location. It really makes you wonder where they’ll take us in future seasons – the possibilities seem limitless!
Only Murders In The Building Only Works Because Of The Main Trio

Although Only Murders in the Building has the potential to continue for many seasons, it absolutely depends on the continued involvement of its three lead actors. The show’s clever mysteries, eccentric characters, and interesting settings are great, but the real magic comes from the incredible connection between Charles, Oliver, and Mabel – without them, the show just wouldn’t work.
If any of the three stars left, the show would really suffer. Selena Gomez brings a sharp, energetic wit, and she’s especially hilarious when bouncing jokes off of Steve Martin or Martin Short. They work perfectly together as a team.
The show’s main characters are irreplaceable. While adding Howard Morris (Michael Cyril Creighton) was a brilliant move – he’s a fun, eccentric addition – he works best as an outside observer. He couldn’t step into one of the original trio’s roles – they’re simply unique and can’t be replicated.
While Only Murders in the Building is consistently funny, some seasons are stronger than others. The weaker episodes tend to focus less on the core trio – Charles, Oliver, and Mabel – and more on side characters or storylines. Ultimately, Martin Short, Steve Martin, and Selena Gomez are the heart of the show, and it wouldn’t be nearly as successful without them.
