Fans of Stranger Things won’t have to wait much longer for more stories! Netflix’s animated series, Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, will be released in just over two months. The official trailer, and comments from the show’s creator Eric Robles, have revealed that a frightening new monster from the Upside Down will be featured.
Before the trailer dropped, everything we heard about Tales from ‘85 indicated that Robles and his animation team had the creative freedom from the Duffer Brothers to develop unique and interesting elements for the alternate dimension connected to Hawkins, Indiana. Now, we’re finally seeing what they’ve come up with.
As a huge fan of the show, I’ve been piecing things together, and it seems like there’s a creature lurking in the Upside Down that we haven’t seen in the original Stranger Things series. Even the big finale, where everything was thrown at Eleven and the gang, didn’t reveal this thing – it’s completely new to the spinoff, as far as I can tell!
Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 Introduces A New Upside Down Creature
Just before the trailer for Stranger Things: Tales from ‘85 was released, the show’s poster hinted at a brand new monster attacking the group while they played in the snowy woods near Hawkins. The official trailer has now confirmed that at least one previously unseen creature from the Upside Down will appear in the series.
This preview shows children enjoying a snowball fight. Nearby, something unseen creates a growing mound of snow as it moves. The scene then cuts to an overhead view of the kids inspecting a peculiar vine growing on a strangely altered tree.
The trailer immediately grabs your attention with quick cuts of scary, plant-like monsters, reminiscent of films like The Day of the Triffids. We first see a small, four-legged creature – one we’ve already seen in the announcement video for Tales from ‘85 back in November – with a mouth full of sharp, petal-shaped teeth.
The latest season of Stranger Things introduces truly terrifying new monsters. Viewers will see a pumpkin-like creature with two mouths that hungers for blood, a vine with a four-sided mouth that attacks from inside a vehicle, and a massive, shadowy being with a wooden claw lurking within Hawkins High School.
The most disturbing moment is when a huge, spider-like creature descends on Will, its mouth opening in a way that strongly recalls the Mind Flayer’s terrifying appearance. These glimpses of strange and frightening things from the Upside Down build excitement for Tales from ‘85, but they also change established details from Stranger Things.
How Tales From ’85 Is Rewriting Stranger Things Lore
This new series takes place in the winter of 1985, fitting between the second and third seasons of Stranger Things. The trailer for Tales from ‘85 shows a creature we haven’t seen before in the Stranger Things universe, which means it’s changing established details from the original series that were previously considered final after its conclusion last year.
The show needs to address why Eleven and her group never encounter the creatures shown in the trailer throughout the seasons of Stranger Things. If they don’t, dedicated fans will likely point out this plot hole.
Tales From ’85 Risks Repeating A Huge Stranger Things Problem
Beyond just the inconsistent way monsters from the Upside Down appear, Tales from ‘85 faces an even larger issue. It risks making the same mistake as Stranger Things – a lack of major character deaths. Stranger Things didn’t have a main character die until the very end of its fifth season, and Tales from ‘85 seems to be heading down the same path.
Because Tales from ‘85 is set in the same timeline as Stranger Things, any character who survives to season 3 of the main series must remain alive in the animated show. The only way to eliminate a character in Tales from ‘85 is to introduce and then remove a new character.
