The third episode of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ was the most significant so far, revealing details about Egg’s (Dexter Sol Ansell) history. The episode also touched on a prophecy concerning his future, which book readers of George R.R. Martin have called frightening.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has been a great addition to the world of Game of Thrones because it feels realistic and stays true to the detailed fantasy world created by George R.R. Martin.
The story has introduced Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) and his squire, Egg, as they travel to Ashford for a tournament, where they begin to form a friendship. However, things become more complicated when members of the Targaryen family arrive.
The third episode, ‘The Squire,’ ends with a major revelation about Egg’s past, changing how we understand his place in the story. Be warned: this contains spoilers for both the show and the books!
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Episode 3’s “terrifying” Egg prophecy

The major surprise is that ‘Egg,’ as he’s known, is actually Aegon V Targaryen. Interestingly, a prophecy about him – predicting he’d become king and that people who knew him would celebrate his death – turns out to be true if you look at what happens in the books.
In the third episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Dunk and Egg meet a fortune teller who predicts Dunk will achieve great wealth and become richer than anyone in the powerful Lannister family.
It’s so frustrating watching him – he totally doesn’t believe her, which is hilarious to me because I know she’s absolutely right! Then, she turns to Egg and delivers this amazing, dramatic line: “You shall be king and die in a hot fire, and worms shall feed upon your ashes!” It gave me chills!
The unsettling prediction that everyone who knows her will celebrate her death frightens Egg. Dunk, however, lightens the mood by laughing, believing the prediction is way off base.

He quickly discovers that this isn’t as far-fetched as he thought, because Egg is actually Prince Aegon Targaryen – the son of Maekar Targaryen (played by Sam Spruell) and the grandson of King Daeron II Targaryen.
Additionally, the books reveal that Egg is destined to become the fifth king with that name to rule from the Iron Throne, and the fifteenth Targaryen king to govern the Seven Kingdoms.
The fortune teller also predicted his death accurately: he eventually died in a massive fire at the Targaryen summer residence while trying to hatch dragon eggs.
Viewers have commented on how frightening the prophecy must have sounded to Egg. One Reddit user described it as “terrifying,” while another said it was “insane.” A third commenter noted the prophetess delivered a particularly grim message.
As a huge fan, I was a little thrown when that plot point showed up so early in the HBO show. Someone else online felt the same way, wondering why they included it in the same episode where his Targaryen heritage was revealed. But honestly, another fan pointed out that it was actually brilliant foreshadowing, and now I totally see it! It makes so much sense looking back.
Why fortune teller says “rejoice” about Aegon Targaryen’s death

A line from the prophecy is puzzling people: “all who know you shall rejoice in your dying.” Considering Egg is a kind person, it’s surprising to think he’d become a hated Targaryen.
Don’t worry, Egg doesn’t become a villain – in fact, he’s a surprisingly good ruler. As King Aegon V, he earns a reputation for helping common people, enacting changes that make their lives better and reduce the power of the nobles.
While common people appreciate this, many lords dislike his efforts to limit their power and advantages.
Considering everything, the prophecy seems less about general mourning and more about politics. Those celebrating Egg’s death aren’t the people he was trying to help, but rather the leaders he consistently opposed.
Someone asked in a discussion about the third episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms on Reddit, “Why did people dislike him so much?”
Someone else pointed out that he prioritized the common people over the powerful lords. Lacking dragons to enforce his changes like Jahaerys had done, he attempted to strengthen his position by arranging marriages between his children and members of the great houses.
His children caused outrage by canceling their arranged marriages with noble families and instead marrying each other, or even commoners like Jenny of Old Stones. This angered the powerful lords, who were relieved when he passed away.
One Reddit user questioned why people would be upset about Egg’s death. Another responded that those in power – the nobles – didn’t want Aegon to become king.
Why will people be happy when Egg dies?

A high council convened and selected him to lead, but some members opposed his kingship because he prioritized the needs of common people.
After spending years traveling, people saw him as just an ordinary man, not a nobleman. Ironically, even though he was a truly great king, others celebrated when he died.
Someone else chimed in, suggesting the summer hall fire wasn’t an accident. They believe it was deliberately started to kill the man and his family, and that it was disguised as an accident – a cover-up for murder. This theory fits with how Ser Duncan dies in the historical accounts, making it seem quite likely.
Many powerful lords hoped Aemon would claim the throne, but he firmly refused and joined the Night’s Watch to escape the responsibility. It was a surprising and ultimately tragic decision.
The first three episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms are now available on HBO Max. Plus, you can find out why dragons aren’t featured in the series, explore the possible connection between Dunk and Hodor, and see what other new shows are being released this month.
