Apple’s Mistborn Superpowers Will Put the MCU to Shame

The company recently announced a huge deal: they’re planning a movie series based on Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn and a TV series based on The Stormlight Archive. Sanderson has partnered with Apple in a groundbreaking agreement. While Mistborn is a fantasy story, its magic system, Allomancy, is often considered one of the best superpower systems ever written and has the potential to be even more impressive on screen than what we’ve seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Despite being a huge superhero universe, the Marvel Cinematic Universe often seems hesitant to showcase truly amazing powers. Characters like the Hulk have become less powerful over time, and the new Captain America relies on technology rather than inherent abilities. Currently, many Avengers are essentially just skilled fighters with weapons. The movies could use a boost of extraordinary powers, and the planned Mistborn films from Apple could deliver just that.

The MCU Has Always Tamed Down It’s Superpowers

While characters like Thor and Scarlet Witch are known for their incredible powers, many others in the Marvel Cinematic Universe don’t really have powers as a central part of who they are. Iron Man’s suits and Black Widow’s skills are entertaining, but for a lot of heroes, their abilities feel secondary.

Even heroes with extraordinary abilities, like Captain America, Black Panther, and Spider-Man, don’t push their powers to unbelievable extremes. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has consistently struck a good balance between the fantastical nature of comic books and the more realistic approach often seen in DC films.

This shift isn’t necessarily negative for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The established formula has worked incredibly well for over ten years. However, even recent Marvel movies have varied greatly in terms of power levels – from incredibly powerful characters like the Fantastic Four or the Sentry, to those with almost no powers at all. The superhero genre as a whole needs a fresh approach to regain its momentum.

Mistborn Can Bring a New Style of Powers to the Big Screen

What makes these stories so captivating is the unique magic systems of Allomancy and, to a smaller extent, Feruchemy. These powers create endless exciting opportunities within the books, and that potential would translate incredibly well to film. Both systems are practically begging to be visualized, and their visually stunning effects could easily surpass those seen in Marvel movies.

In the stories, Allomancy is a magical ability where people gain powers by using different metals. Those who practice Allomancy ingest and internally “burn” these metals to activate their specific power. While most people can only use one metal, a special individual called a Mistborn can use all of them.

In this world, certain metals grant special abilities. Those who ingest tin, known as Tineye, gain enhanced senses and can see in the dark. Burning pewter gives people increased strength and resilience, while brass allows them to subtly influence others’ feelings. Many other metals offer unique powers, but steel and iron are particularly noteworthy and will play a significant role.

Eating steel lets you push metal objects around you, while eating iron lets you pull them. This creates incredible possibilities – you could almost fly or jump huge distances, or even create swirling attacks with metal flying at your enemies. These pushing and pulling abilities are visually impressive and among the most exciting in the story. Like the Force Push and Pull from Star Wars, using iron and steel adds a realistic sense of weight and momentum to each action.

Feruchemy is a bit like Allomancy, but instead of burning metals for power, people use them to store abilities for later. This means you could store your strength and use it whenever you need a boost, or even save your eyesight for better observation. People can even store knowledge and recall it instantly. While it might not be as flashy as Allomancy, Feruchemy is incredibly versatile and offers a wide range of clever applications.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe often favors understated superpowers, but Mistborn is known for its grand concepts and exciting action. Allomancy has the potential to be a truly spectacular visual experience, offering something fresh and unique for audiences.
