Guy Ritchie’s Panned $180-Million “Charmless Treasure Hunt” Action Adventure Continues a Shocking Run on Streaming

As a movie buff, I’m honestly surprised, but really impressed with how well Guy Ritchie’s Fountain of Youth is still doing. Critics weren’t kind to it when it came out last May (2025), calling it a blend of Uncharted and National Treasure, but it’s been consistently in Apple TV’s Top 10 ever since! It’s currently the fifth most popular movie globally, holding its own between Wolfs and The Family Plan. It’s a bit of a streaming phenomenon, and I don’t see it disappearing from the charts anytime soon.

Despite being called uninspired, a cheap imitation of The Da Vinci Code, and a weak sequel to the Indiana Jones movies, Fountain of Youth managed to stay in the Top 10 for a surprisingly long time. This is even more remarkable considering fans didn’t like it much either. The film has a ‘Rotten’ score of only 35% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a very low 38% audience score, with one viewer commenting:

This movie’s plot is as silly as an Indiana Jones adventure, but it lacks the charm of those films – the dialogue isn’t witty, and the characters aren’t engaging. Several parts of the story didn’t make any logical sense, and the big reveal at the end was predictable and underwhelming. The actors deserve credit just for getting through the lines with a straight face. Overall, it’s a terrible movie, but hopefully the cast and crew were compensated for their work.

Is Guy Ritchie’s ‘Fountain of Youth’ Really That Bad?

Okay, so Fountain of Youth… it had a fantastic cast – John Krasinski, Natalie Portman, Eiza González, Domhnall Gleeson – seriously, the star power was there. But honestly, great actors can’t save a weak story. The script just didn’t deliver. The characters felt flat and I couldn’t connect with any of them, and the whole movie just felt like a rehash of things I’ve seen a million times before. It really needed something original to make it stand out.

Despite its flaws, Fountain of Youth isn’t a terrible movie. It’s a perfectly harmless and fun adventure that the whole family can enjoy. The story is simple, it has a video game-like feel, and it clearly pays tribute to classic adventure films. While it’s a bit long at 125 minutes, it’s still a good way to spend a couple of hours and recapture some childhood fun.

What’s Next for Guy Ritchie?

Guy Ritchie is best known for intense, violent action movies, so his film Fountain of Youth felt quite different. If you were hoping for something more in line with his usual style, you’ll be pleased to know he’s going back to his signature action roots later this year with the release of In the Grey.

The new action thriller, starring Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal, arrives in theaters on April 10th. The film follows two experts in extraction as they work to help a negotiator escape a dangerous situation. This marks the third time Cavill has teamed up with director Guy Ritchie, following their previous collaborations on The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015) and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (2024).

Following that, Ritchie will direct “Wife & Dog” in October, a darkly comedic film featuring an impressive cast including Benedict Cumberbatch, Rosamund Pike, Anthony Hopkins, Cosmo Jarvis, James Norton, Paddy Considine, and Pip Torrens. The story centers on a ruthless fight for power within the wealthy Fairbank family.
