A planned spin-off show featuring Ding Chavez won’t be moving forward, and Michael Peña has now shared the reason why. Peña first played Chavez in season four of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, and it was expected he’d reprise the role of the former SEAL in a series called Rainbow Six.
In a recent conversation with Liam Crowley from ScreenRant, John Peña hinted that problems with securing the necessary permissions might be why a spin-off show featuring his Jack Ryan character from Rainbow Six never materialized. While he admits this is largely his own guess, Peña also believes the decision to release Without Remorse (2021) directly on streaming, instead of in theaters, could have played a role.
According to Peña, the issue was that they weren’t able to secure the rights to the character. After Crowley confirmed he was referring to the rights, Peña explained further about why the series was canceled. You can find Peña’s full statement below.
I initially believed the project would start filming about a year sooner. However, there were complications with securing the rights to the character, and the desire for a spin-off created further issues. It also seemed like there were financial concerns, as the film Without Remorse was originally intended for theatrical release but ended up being released on Prime Video, suggesting some debts needed to be settled.
It’s all just speculation, but I was surprised there wasn’t a spin-off series for that popular character. Instead, I ended up working on ‘All Her Fault,’ which is a great project.
I was really excited to see Domingo “Ding” Chavez in season 4 of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan – he was a great partner to Jack Ryan! It definitely felt like the show was building things up for a spinoff focused on his character, but then I started hearing things weren’t as certain as everyone thought after the season ended. It’s a shame if that spinoff doesn’t happen now.
The series Jack Ryan featured a spin-off, Ding Chavez, created by Peña as part of Amazon’s plans to expand the franchise. Another Tom Clancy adaptation, Without Remorse, starred Michael B. Jordan as Navy SEAL John Kelly. Originally intended for a theatrical release, the action thriller—directed by Stefano Sollima—moved to Amazon and premiered on Prime Video due to the COVID-19 pandemic after being shifted from Paramount.
Although critics weren’t thrilled, the movie performed well for Amazon in terms of viewers. A sequel is reportedly in the works, also titled Rainbow Six. Chad Stahelski, known for directing the John Wick films, is involved, but development has been moving at a slow pace.
Rainbow Six is the name of an elite counter-terrorism unit that originated in Tom Clancy’s books. While Kelly founded the team, Chavez eventually rose to become a central figure in its operations. It’s unclear whether there were any planned connections between the Rainbow Six TV show and a potential sequel to the movie Without Remorse.
Besides the reasons Peña mentioned, the Jack Ryan spin-off might be delayed because of the Rainbow Six movie. Having both a show and a movie about the same team could confuse viewers, so Amazon may have decided to prioritize the movie directed by Stahelski.
We haven’t received any recent news about the project, so its current status is uncertain. Currently, Peña’s statements indicate that a spin-off series focusing on Ding Chavez from the Jack Ryan universe isn’t likely to happen in the near future.
